I'm sure this was mentioned at some point, but maybe it was only in the Moderator's forum. In any event, this rule obviously hasn't been clearly posted (like in this thread). I just got an email from Newsweet asking me to pull one of the threads in this forum -- as you guys know, I don't generally venture in here otherwise.

mike look at page 179 of Articles of Note thread, you'll see 3 stories that even include the copyright info included in the post. geez people will actually have to support their position with logic now instead of pilfering others ideas

Even if you include the copyright notice, it's no good -- you're still violating the very notice you're posting! Please LINK to the articles and quote only a paragraph if it directly highlights your position -- not an entire article. Thanks! *runs away*

i know giving the author credit and or including the copyright info is not fair use, i was just pointing out how bad it is in here with unfair use, if thats the right term. and no mike those posts aren't mine, i right code for a living i know all about intellectual property, and its need to be protected.

I do so much enjoy articles posted by members, they always find the interesting stuff, not naming names of course! >f

I would make this thread a "sticky" if I were you. Doesn't hurt to have an ever present reminder, and besides there will always be new members who might otherwise not see this thread. Anyway, an email from Newsweek? From their lawyers? Wow, I think I would frame it, you don't get one of those every day, hopefully.

This should cut Angel's posts down to about 5% of her current level!

Gee, let me think were have I heard this before:

That said we should (that is an editorial "we", really Mike should) consider implementing a policy of not allowing copy and past of full articles. The problem is that if someone decides to give Mike a hard time or mounts a legal threat it could cost to much to fight. Face it, TSG is not a multi-million dollar operation. One suit and we could be left without our favorite hangout. I would suggest to Mike, if I was his lawyer, to impose a ban on full posting of articles. In it's place I would suggest the poster paste a small portion of an article with a link to the remainder. The poster could post just enough to give the flavor of what the article is about. In the case of newspapers the first paragraph (which is usually one sentence) gives the gist of the story anyway. This restriction would, obviously, have to be written into the rules and post conspicuously about the site. I elect Mulder to write the rule cause he doesn't have anything to do anyway. Or just steal it from another site. And it has the added benefit of being able to quickly scroll past anything posted by xico, linskyjack, Bassetman etc etc.
See HERE.

I've stated this before to no avail and I would further suggest that if Mike wants to avoid letters from the lawyers he might want to start having his moderators enforce the rule (which Mulder is going to write ).

Oh boy.. I can see a new thread being opened and beat to death about " yet another rule". If I had a crystal ball like some in CD I would venture a guess as to who will start it. I can't wait.

Clarification needed. I post the short blurb on the Gallup Poll in the Gallup Poll thread when I get a new one. Is that alright? If I have to post a link, I'll just discontinue it because people would have to register to read it.

Good grief Mike. You shouldn't have to be going through all that. People should be
careful, even in a familiar environment....
