Eye on Mexico
I thought I'd start a new thread for this

As most of you know, I reside in Mexico most of the time. Although I do like Vicente Fox, and think that 6 years is not enough time to change over 70 years of theft from the PRI party....I feel that his party probably will not get elected again. People want to see change overnight, and it just cannot happen, no matter which country you are in.

The Mexico City mayor (who has had his share of scandal problems, one of them accepting bribes from a Panamanian businessman) is currently the front runner, and if elections were held today, according to some of the polls, he would win by a 20 percent margin

Here is his website (it's in Spanish) --- but I will try to post articles I can find in English

http://www.lopez-obrador.com.mx/

In some political circles, he is compared to Hugo Chavez of Venezuela

Obrador can't be all that bad compared to past Mexican presidents........actually could be a breath of fresh air.............kick off the next Mexican Revolution that's always just under the facade of stability. If comparing him to Chavez, that should be a plus..........anyone that is hated by Pat Robertson and the Bush administration must have some redeeming characteristics (Saddam, being an exception). Although illegal, I have no doubts the US government will be filtering tons of money into Mexico to insure Obrador's defeat............just as they did in Venezuela (without success), close, but no cigar!

I really haven't taken a position one way or another yet. I used to tune into his morning 'propaganda chat' that he holds that is televised Monday thru Friday. There are only a handful of 'tv' personalties who speak clear and concise. That makes it easier for the 'gringos' who aren't completely bi-lingual, to understand better

Vicente Fox is also a good speaker. I've been away since the beginning of May...so, I'm behind on the political scenes and Angelize Live at 5 isn't too good about digging up stories for me I'm going to have to send her a google board in Spanish

Good job angelize. Not sure who comes second Time will tell, but I'm sure his pockets will be high on the list

slickoe, I don't think it's the rich kids that are doing that, quite frankly.

Candy....of course you believe this:

Wall Street fears that leftist Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador may win Mexico's presidential elections in July and become the latest anti-U.S. leader in Latin America.

But Lopez Obrador appears unsure about foreign policy and has avoided targeting the United States in otherwise fiery campaign speeches.

"If I reach the presidency I am going to respect Chavez, Bush and everyone
," he said last week.

This is cute:

Mexico and Venezuela withdrew ambassadors last week as Chavez refused to apologize for calling Fox a U.S. lap dog and warned, "Don't mess with me, mister, or you'll get stung."

Here's the article:

Fox obtains little from Bush

Saturday, November 19, 2005 10:29 a.m. ET

By Alistair Bell

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Branded a "lap dog" of imperialism, Mexican President Vicente Fox has earned contempt from leftist Latin American leaders for his close ties to the United States, and little in return from Washington.

A plan to let more immigrants work legally in the United States -- Mexico's headline foreign policy goal -- has become bogged down in Congress after five years of lobbying from Fox.

Now who to elect.................best of luck!

Thanks, I saw Chavez's response to Fox. Too much fun in politics.

The U.S. helped greatly to get Fox elected.....since then, they've pretty much sent him out to dry............If Obrador wins, it will be the U.S.'s fault.....mark my words.

Hi Jill!

Legacy

Most analysts consider Fox's term will be remembered for being the first of an opposition party in modern times and for following the steps of previous governments (most notably previous president Zedillo) but doing little of its own. Most of the important reforms passed in Fox's term were proposed by the PRI in previous terms and rejected (among others) by Fox and his party at the time. The Index of perception of corruption of Mexico has been decreasing during his government. Also, according to the World Economic Forum, the competitiveness ranking of Mexico fell from number 48 to 55 from 2004 to 2005.

Yes, he is. Having lived there before and he was elected and since....you can see major changes, infrastructure, etc. However, he simply can't please everyone, and this chap from Mexico City is making promises that will be impossible to keep. You wouldn't believe what goes on before elections with the politicians visiting the poor pueblos and literally buying votes.

Kind of like the U.S.
