While punishing those responsible is a big issue, we ought to focus more on catching more.
I can't tell you how many times I've seen people driving drunk, pictures of drunken parking jobs, et cetera.
I know the police force is thin but this is something that puts our lives in more imminent danger than some stupid kids stealing, vandalizing university property, etc.
Like anything, it's a matter of prioritization.

Teens Mourn 4 Killed on Class Beach Trip

By GREG RISLING
Associated Press Writer

PERRIS, Calif. (AP) -- A high school that recently held a drunken driving awareness campaign that included a mock memorial service prepared for a real one Friday for four seniors killed on a beach trip days before graduation.

Witnesses told troopers that the boys waved beer cans from a car window as they passed a busload of classmates. State police said the car was apparently racing another vehicle at up to 100 mph when it swerved off Interstate 15 and hit a tree.

Two buses came upon the scene moments after the crash, and the class trip was abandoned.

"Everybody recognized the car," said Viviane Macias, 18, was aboard one of the buses and was friends with one of the boys. "People started text-messaging and calling each other about what happened."

Grief counselors were at Perris High School, and a memorial service was set for Friday in the gym. Graduation was still on for Saturday.

The teens had decided to take a private car instead of riding school buses on the Wednesday trip to Mission Beach in San Diego, about 70 miles south.

Pablo Ruiz, 18, Javier Aguayo, 17, and Anthony O'Neil, 17, died at the scene. Jose Espinosa, 18, who was thrown from the car with Ruiz, died the next day at a hospital.]\

Forty-two opened and unopened cans were found scattered around the crash site, said Tom Kerns, a spokesman for the California Highway Patrol.

Kerns said one of the 17-year-olds was at the wheel but declined to identify him. The San Diego County medical examiner will determine whether the driver had been drinking.

Woman ties county’s blood alcohol record
Reading was more than six times the legal limit of 0.08

Updated: 9:33 p.m. ET June 22, 2007

TACOMA, Wash. - A Pierce County woman apparently tied a record for the amount of alcohol in her blood when the Washington State Patrol toxicology lab measured a blood-alcohol content of 0.50 two hours after she was arrested for investigation of drunken driving.

Ann Marie Gordon, manager of the lab in Seattle, said the reading -- more than six times the legal limit of 0.08 -- tied the highest level ever found by technicians at the patrol's lab. A King County driver also registered 0.50 on a blood test in 2000, Gordon said.

"It certainly would kill many people," she said.

Rebecca G. Lingbloom, 45, pleaded not guilty Wednesday to one count of driving under the influence of alcohol on May 10. Authorities contended in an affidavit that she nearly hit a pedestrian that day and was seen swerving all over the road.

A Pierce County sheriff's deputy later found her passed out behind the wheel of her car
in the Summit area, the affidavit states.

Deputy Prosecutor Bradley Moericke pointed out that Lingbloom was arrested for investigation of drunken driving twice in the 1990s, and asked District Court Judge Frank Dacca to jail her in lieu of $20,000 bail.

Another young life cut short at the hands of an alleged drunk driver! How can anyone leave a child to die in the road like that...to not care enough to even check to see if the child was alive...it's sickening...even if a person isn't drunk...how could they leave a child like that... God bless Krystal...she now rides her beloved Buster in Heaven....what a beautiful young lady she was...

Friends, family remember 12-year-old girl
Krystal Speer killed while riding her horse Saturday

WJRT By Gabe Gutierrez

BIRCH RUN TOWNSHIP (WJRT) - (07/09/07)--Friends and family are remembering a 12-year-old girl killed in a hit-and-run accident over the weekend in Birch Run Township.

It happened around 11:30 p.m. Saturday on Block Road. Police say a man crossed the center line and hit Krystal Speer as she was riding her horse.

Charges against the suspect are pending.

It's been a waiting game here at the prosecutor's office. No warrants have been issued for the 34-year-old man who turned himself in Sunday.

Meanwhile, those who knew Speer put up a makeshift memorial near the crash site. She was riding her horse with two other friends. Police say someone crossed over the center line and hit her.

Both she and the horse died. Police believe alcohol was a factor in the crash.

This is the second case I've heard like his...appalling!

Jul 11, 2:05 PM EDT

Pedestrian Body Stuck in Car Windshield

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) -- A motorist hit two pedestrians, then drove home with one of the bodies lodged in his windshield, police said. The man in the windshield died.

Police said Steve Warrichaiet was drunk when he struck the pedestrians as he returned home from a friend's house late Sunday.

One pedestrian was found lying on a street, critically injured, but police said the second victim remained lodged in Warrichaiet's windshield while he drove seven blocks home and parked in his garage.

Warrichaiet's sister, Donna Gutowski, said he called her early Monday, minutes after midnight.

"'Now I really did it. I killed somebody. I put the body in the car,'" she recalled Warrichaiet saying. "But I didn't believe him. He had talked nonsense before."

She said she learned the crash really happened when an investigator came to her home that morning.

Warrichaiet called police about 5:40 a.m. Monday, reporting that he'd been in an accident and thought he hit someone, authorities said. Police Lt. David Wesely said investigators didn't know what happened in the six hours between the crash and the man's call to police. (Neither does he I bet!)

Tyrone Ware, 50, of Green Bay, was pronounced dead when police arrived at Warrichaiet's home. The second victim, a woman, was in critical condition Wednesday at St. Vincent Hospital, a nursing supervisor said.

In a similar case in 2001 in Texas, a former nurse's aide hit a homeless man, drove home with him wedged in her windshield and then left him to bleed to death in her garage. Chante Jawan Mallard was convicted of murder and sentenced in 2003 to 50 years in prison ( She got what she deserved...the monster!)
