Thumbs down Bush to blame for flopping of "Basic Instinct 2"?
Erotic thrillers lose steam at box office-- Reuters

Quote:
Paul Verhoeven, director of the first "Basic Instinct" (which scored $353 million worldwide) as well as the widely ridiculed "Showgirls" (now regarded as something of a camp classic), attributes the genre's demise to the current American political climate.

"Anything that is erotic has been banned in the United States," said the Dutch native. "Look at the people at the top (of the government). We are living under a government that is constantly hammering out Christian values. And Christianity and sex have never been good friends."

Scribe Nicholas Meyer, who was an uncredited writer on 1987's seminal sex-fueled cautionary tale "Fatal Attraction," agrees, noting that the genre's downfall coincides with the ascent of the conservative political movement.
Mmmmhmmm. Absolutely. Those darn conservatives and their darn conservative values. It's not the fact that the story is no good, or that the critics hated it, it's the fault of the conservatives and the Christians. I concur absolutely. /sarcasm

I haven't heard about this banning of erotic films he is talking about. But being a Dutch native his opinion will be different.

Well, that's exactly my point. There is NO banning or discouragement of the production erotic thrillers coming from the White House. It's completely inane to say that, and being Dutch has nothing to do with it, I don't think.

Maybe some liberals can explain to me the (il)logic going on here behind Mr. Verhoeven's statement?

Holland, his native country, is a very liberal country thus his opinion.

He's blaming Bush because he associates him with the religious right. I'm not a Bush fan, but I feel his assumption is off the wall. Makes no sense at all with the type of movies we have here.

One thing some people like better than Bush-bashing is Christian-bashing. You just watch how quickly this thread turns!

Hi valley,

The Dutch director has accumulated a stack of flops and it is other people's fault !
The 'moral' justification he used against Bush will be welcomed in Europe, the last hope his movie will make good sales.

I haven't seen any groups of liberal or conservative natures comment on the fight tournaments that are appearing on Spike TV.
