Unhappy The Future of Invasive E-Biz:
Is this the future of E-Biz?

Will the gradual loss of personal privacy and the Third party exchange of personal data, Data Mining, Consumer Profiling etc, lead to this?

We are almost there!

http://www.aclu.org/pizza/images/screen.swf

Now, I know that Mulder and GB will go " The ACLU!" and almost instantly suffer a fit of the vapours!

However, there is a very serious reality to this Flash movie.

Cool Amazed!

I am amazed that no one has commented on this thread!

Do you all consider this normal?

More importantly, do you believe that this sort of invasive marketing etc is acceptable?

Strange....................

i'm guessin everyone imagines that its a long way off, or is just realizing how we all got sucked into this with our wonderful computers. (and so maybe just don't care too much just yet)

That's really worrying, iltos!

Imagine, almost everthing you buy; everything you plan to do, vacations, leisure, appointments, can and will be tracked.

Your buying habits will create a profile: rightly or wrongly and you will be labelled a Type "X", which could (probably will!) predicate how finance companies view your credit scoring; how health insurers view your risks; and so on.

Perhaps most critical of all, since data on people is often flawed, consider how an incorrect profile might injure your ability to borrow, purchase and insure yourself!

Frightening concept to me!

Yet, no one seem to care..........................................

Maybe more people would care if it were real.

Interesting comment: much of IS REAL all ready!

What do you think outfits like Inktomi and Siebel Systems do, then, amongst many others?

Did you not realise that credit card operators hav been using customer profiling for a number of years? And that Call Centre CTI software, has been using postcode/zipcode data to pre-select variouse bases for their provisions of call service to customers?

Etc, etc, etc.

Paq.

Zip codes are not the same as national ID numbers, voting history, and medical records (which none of those companies track.)
Let us know when it happens, I'm sure you'll get more responses here.

Sorry Paq....the file you posted wouldn't play for me and I missed your point.
Am I correct the topic is profiling thru data mining?

Strange that Stoner: only basic Flash.

Yes, it takes the concepts of Consumer Profiling, Data Mining and etc, to the ultimate levels.

Since I have been quite involved in CTI, I have watched the develpment of associated technologies with grave concern. What this Flash file parodies, is the inevitable progression, to the point where companies are swopping data, without your knowledge or consent (already happening, of course in many ways: such as Credit Scoring) and adjusting their and others, product offering on the basis of extra, privileged knowledge. The movie illustrates this by a guy trying to order a pizza: and he is surcharged on his life assurance, 'cos he is already obese and has obesity driven health problems! etc.

I know that various US civil interest bodies have been very concerned over cookies and other tracking software, as they are in Europe. Most users of the 'Net are blind to the issues: a bit like our friend brendandonhu, but I see from his profile, that he is only 15, so he is forgiven his naiveity!

Mike: I read when you're a member of Harrah's Casino and you call...the screen pops up a display of the members win and loss history, credit info and net worth!

Just one of the problems, Angel.

Far too many sites carry significant personal data about people.

Here, last year Barclays Bank was hacked and about 200,000 people had their credit data and passwords stolen! Amongst many others.

We also now have government bodies, which really ought to be sacrosanct, opening up their private data bases to commercial companies!

A very few seem to be concerned.................................

I've tried to view on two different Windows machines and I keep getting an error.....missing header...unknown file format.
swf files usually play on my machines(in Irfanview), but I seldom view them.

Tried Knoppix on my Dell and it locked it up

But I do agree with you, Paq. It seems a serious problem many people simply accept.
And as the econpmic community here in the US seems based mostly on debt management,
errors that crop up or profiling seem certain to affect many consumers.

Sorry Sparky....your link didn't work. I have Firefox set to block all flash and I guess that's what happened.

Well then that's why, Stoner!

I kept it off my systems for a long while, too. Have to go with the flow in the end. Actually it was Mrs P: needed to run some assessments for work. Had to change all my malware settings and firewall etc. Still, only on the home office PC. My laptop and big graphics station are still virgins!
