A call to Rational Ignorance - This oughta get some feathers rustled
I've been browsing through the Civ-Deb threads and it just occured to me - So What?

Who Cares?

Take your gross pay, subtract out your net pay, and you have your entire tax liability. For me, that's less than 30k/yr. If the govt. wastes a few k, so what? Who cares?

It would take me another 40 hours a week and a ridiculous amount of effort to keep the govt from wasting 2 or 3 % of my taxes. Or the same amount of time to make sure that they invest it in one of these new-fangled(I like that word ) levitating trains, that someone recently posted about.

2% of 30k is $150 - in order to personally affect a $150 change in my annual income level, it would take a lot less time and effort.

The only logical conclusion is to stop wasting your time and effort in Civ-Deb worrying about other people's problems, and live your life.

I'm not arguing against the Civ-Deb, I'm arguing against it's value to you as an individual. It is very valuable to us as a society, but not to any single one of us as an individual.

Instead, spend your time in Random Discussion Learn to speak a new language. Unless you're an attorney, you aren't giong to reap much in the way of benefits from the time you spend in Civ-Deb, so ... toss it out. Make room in your schedule for Esperanto.

I think Lee Van Cleef's character, Angel Eyes, would have been more pragmatic

Civ-Deb seems like a great place to have your grand ideas torn to shreds and picked apart for the little flecks of ignorance, which are then magnified and distorted until no one remembers where they came from in the first place.

And it's usually more informative than the idiot box in my hotel.

Hold your fire!

I recant!

Please forgive me! Pragmatism is for the faint of heart

I would retort with a Clint Eastwood quote, but I can't remember any from that movie ... Did he even talk?

I got one from Tuco, The Ugly: If your going to shoot a man, don't talk, shoot! (it's a paraphrase )

I guess Civ-Deb does serve a purpose in blowing off steam. But it seems like such a waste of mental effort with such 'marginal returns'.

Every time I see one of these Civ-Deb titles, I feel rational ignorance creeping in : "Don't do it, it's a time-pit. Time and knowledge goes in, nothing comes out - at least not anything I can use. Ignore it - anything that's written in there, I don't need to know. Any benefit I derive will be largely by accident. Other forums will reward me for my time - teach me things I didn't know about life, religion, compyuderz, etc. My time is better spent watching grass grow.

In many of the cases I've seen in Civ-Deb, it is more rational to remain ignorant of the topic than to hazard a half-hour that could've been spent picking my nose.

But posting here means less clean-up.

Unfortunately, when talking to a woman, logic often becomes a weakness rather than a strength. Women seem to experience logic differently, kind of like a Bizarro Logic -> Up becomes down, Down becomes up, Yes often means no, and no sometimes means yes.

Dump that logic as if it was green Kryptonite, it'll do you no good here. Rule # 1 - Lay on the complements extra-thick

Example :
Lovely Wife - Does this dress make me look fat?
Enlightened Husband/Servant - (with disgust)That dress doesn't deserve to grace your heavenly body! It sickens me! I find it absolutely revolting next to your goddess-like presence! Just exactly who does it think it is?!?!

LW - So it makes me look fat?
EHS - It makes you look hideously skinny, the way it drapes over your heavenly shoulders! I'd go for something a little more ... worthy. It should at least avert it's eyes when being graced by your presence.
LW - You are making absolutely no sense. And I love you. (That last statement was only theoretical. If you can get it to work, I'd like to know how you did it. )

Good Luck, Bon Voyage, Godspeed, Please disregard everything I said.

Rule # 2 - whatever you do, don't listen to me
