VC winner branded a war criminal
By Paul Chapman in Wellington
(Filed: 10/04/2006)

A ruse that helped to win a soldier the Victoria Cross during the Second World War was a "war crime" and New Zealand should apologise to the families of the snipers he killed, it was claimed yesterday.
Alfred Clive Hulme, the father of Denny Hulme, the late world motor racing champion, was awarded the VC for bravery in killing 33 German snipers over eight days during the Battle of Crete in 1941. He returned home a hero to the town of Nelson.

Seems like his "crime" was outsmarting the people whose job it was to kill him and his comrades from afar.

I find it odd where the complaints are coming from (not Germany). Maybe that's because they know what "war crime" actually means.

Maybe everyone who is sent to war should carry a "Rules of War" book so they could
fight fair.
Seriously though, when I was 22 and in a war zone, the only thing I was concerned about
was living. Stressful situations require quick thinking.

What a load of horse doo doo. Seriously? He should be branded a war criminal for having balls of titanium and amazing conviction? Sure it was a bit underhand and cunning but who gives a damn? Do you think those German snipers would have hestitated for one second had they thought of it first? No way. War is a dangerous game, whatever you can do within the bounds of decency to save you and your comrades from death is fine by me.

Those "authors" should be ashamed for even suggesting such a thing.

Chris.

The "crime " Hulme committed would have been paid for only if captured--execution--no prisoner status. Its what happens when you wear enemy uniform.
I think he deserved VC. A brave soldier who was highly successful in killing armed enemy combatants. Its hard to imagine that anyone would make war criminal charge .
Airforces can bomb thousands of civilians in their beds, dead of night, and be decorated for it but this man is singled out ????.
People are crazy sometimes. >f

Hehe.

If that was an American soldier shooting Arab insurgents in such a manner in Iraq, the outrage would be very palpable here.

The only thing that makes this incident "okay" here is the fact that they were just a bunch of Jerries. It is easier to equate every WW2-era German with evil incarnate. Raises less of a moral dilemma in ourselves. Nazi killin' isn't the same as regular killin'.

Not that I am arguing that the man should be scrutinized or charged with a crime. I don't pretend that this kind of stuff doesn't happen in war.

It will be funny to read the renewed outrage the next time someone posts about an American war crime in Iraq.

So it would have been better to let the snipers pick people off?

Good for him, he deserves the Victoria Cross.
