Okay another new weapon..
Well, here's to the next generation of weapons. Good grief, as I said before, the Star
Trek world is here.

I know it's the testing time, but, almost all of us have been through the testing time.

This is true ... but don't let Elmer Cheney get a hold of a ray gun!! Can you imagine the damage Fuddy Dick could inflict on lawyers everywhere??!!

That comment sounds an awfull lot like a comment about only having silverware around so that you don't need to use it.

Wow those are some strange weapons. The one that makes you feel like you're burning is pushing the boundaries of what's acceptable I think. However I guess all weapons have their uses. There are some really neat non lethal weapons coming into use now such as the LRAD sound cannon used on ships to deter pirates.LINK

The future of war technology has been shaped both by and has shaped science fiction writers for quite a long time.

Take Dean Ing's "Firefight 2000" (c. 1987) collection for example. When I read this I didn't care much for the stories, but there were a few essays that intrigued me, the one on small arms especially.

From my recollection Ing described such things as ring shaped bullets with the insides coated with jet fuel and an igniter to make "jet propelled" rifle ammunition, or the intense light strobe that induced siezures, even down to genetically engineered insects that stung troops that didn't have a chemical odor from eating the right rations or having the right scent on their uniforms. Very heady stuff, at the time, for a twenty-something in the Army.

Also found an interesting article about SF and war technology by Chris Gray here

Quite a long time indeed. If I remember right, Leonardo Da Vinci came up with the conmcept of the tank, the helicopter, a shotgun-like-howitzer, and quite a few more.

It's just so tragic to inflict that kind of carnage on another human being. What will they
think of next.

And the reply...

I kinda liked the guided torpedo tested during WW2
guidance was a hen pecking at a screen over a front window to get grains of grain.
The screen pecks were converted to missle guidance.
Point the missle nearly at a ship and the hen would adjust for any manouvering done after shooting it off.
