Welcome to TSG Argy! Pot smoking has it's bad effects just as smoking regular cigarettes does...and it does alter the senses...I don't think it should ever be legalized except for medicinal purposes..of course that's because I'm a nurse! I wouldn't want my teenage son in a car with anyone who has smoked pot....I don't care what others say...my opinion is you shouldn't smoke pot and drive...among other things one shouldn't do after or during smoking pot!

interesting first post, to say the least. I agree, mostly, with angel. Which is generally a good habit to get into. However, I disagree with the legalization issue; I feel that if alcohol and cigarettes, both of which are considerably worse on the body than, say, heroin (certain sites states that the body will process alcohol before heroin, but I dunno about that), are legal, than something such as marijuana should be legalized as well, but with the same guidelines as alcohol.

And I neither drink NOR smoke.

I guess they'd have to come up with a THC level to set up such a scale eh!

My answer is, that a part from the laws -- which I consider a separate issue -- it depends on the individual -- their personal level of discipline, expectations and responsibilities.

Some people just kid themselves that they can handle it -- and in effect rely on it as a necessary social crutch, just as many alcoholics do. For these people it becomes the centerpiece of their social relationships -- and the lowest common denominator binding them to others.

When you find that you have few, if any, social relationships in which a joint or a bong is not brought out -- you have a problem.

By the time you are 35 you should be well aware of how it can limit, rather than expands your ability to relate.

Pot is different that alcohol in this respect. Get drunk and you will probably be "sober" in 24 hours unless you are an alcoholic. Get stoned -- and there will be residual effects for days. The effect is subtle, but real. The way you will relate to people will be altered in ways you may not be fully aware of -- and if you smoke only a couple of times a week -- that is enough to make a long-term difference in your personality and temperament.

But as I said at the beginning -- this is a very individualistic thing. Creative and energetic people can often make very entertaining and productive use of drugs.

But frankly, most are just a bore.

I just came here to say that, yes I most certainly am prepared to back up my opinions, as you call them. And from now on, please refrain from calling my opinions Opinions. The very fact that they are my opinions, means that they are, in fact, facts.

Edit: I suppose I should add some smilies

Well said. It always depends on the individual...Reminds me of a radio show host.
His name is Dr. Dean Edel, or something like that, and he said that the one question
that should be asked of these individuals is: Why do you do drugs?
And, the answer would probably be, to feel good...And, in some cases, be more
productive.....

agreed, Rog

i will say that angel's point is well taken re: altered states, as they apply to drug use and wielding an automobile....anything, actually, in our fast paced and modern world that affects others' lives.

i personally don't use drugs anymore...mostly 'cause they have done whatever it was i wanted them to do for me....altered me enough to where i feel free from the expectations i was taught to believe were vital to my happiness on this planet and especially in this country.....someone on the outside looking in might successfully argue that "me now" is just a function of age....but i know it just ain't so

and, as Rog points out, my sensibilites re: drugs are a result of me....doesn't mean i'm an advocate of EVERYBODY experimenting with 'em.....nor does it mean that it is NEVER the right thing for another individual to do....

makes me a depraved commie pinko moral relativist in some people's eyes, i know..

i can live with that

heyya angel, thanks!

I think that if they just used your standard monitoring tests, it would be just as readily apparent that the person in question couldn't pass either test.

Mulder:

Thanks for the lovely compliment. In response, I most likely am the life of the party. I dunno, however. I also don't care. The reason I don't drink OR smoke any longer is the propensity that I have for abuse of those substances, rather than recreational usage. I've got 8 years of sobriety this June, and I know that I needed to get that way for me, not for people around me.

My wife and son seem to think I'm life enough, so that's good enough for me.

Iltos, it only makes you that in the closed minds of the "all drugs are evil" twits that don't care to examine facts. I also agree with Rog as to the individual responses to different drugs. Back in the day, I smoked like most of my generation and tried a couple of other drugs just to see what they were all about. Didn't like downers at all as I was asleep so fast that there was no "buzz". Speed just kept me awake and able to drink more beer til I got sick. Same with Coke. Tried PCP once, never again. Too weird!! Pot was more to my tastes as it seems to have amplified whatever I was doing at the time. If I was competing in a Kayak race, I got more into it and had several US records that were made, some while high, some while straight. If I was sitting down playing guitar, then I really got into playing, same with TV. Some cannot handle it as it does make them paranoid, although that never seemed to happen to me. I would never advocate any mind altering drug for teens or younger kids, but once an adult, you should be able to buy and use just about anything you want as long as it is regulated properly and used in a manner that does not put others at risk. Think of the money wasted on the "war on drugs" and the lives of otherwise law-abiding people in jail for possession that could be used to treat those that want to stop using drugs. This should be a health issue and not a criminal one!
