#1171 | German study sees job boom from Sahara solar project
BERLIN (Reuters) - A project linking solar power from the Sahara to energy users in Europe and North Africa could create 240,000 German jobs and generate 2 trillion euros ($2,822 billion) worth of power by 2050, a study published on Thursday found.
The report by Germany's Wuppertal Institute for Climate for Greenpeace and the Club of Rome also said more than 580,000 jobs in concentrated solar power (CSP) could be created worldwide by the middle of the century with the right political framework.
"Renewable energy could become Germany's leading industry in the 21st century," Greenpeace energy expert Andree Boehling told a news conference. "And concentrated solar power could become Germany's next export hit after photovoltaic and wind energy."
Germany has become a world leader in renewable energy technology in the last decade and some 214,000 people are employed in the sector. There are over 750,000 people working in the car sector, Germany's leading industry. http://www.reuters.com/article/GCA-G...56153V20090702 | | Distinguished Member with 25,423 posts. | | Join Date: Jun 2002 Location: Venice, FL Experience: Intermediate |

#1173 | Grand Jury Inquiry on Destruction of C.I.A. Tapes
By MARK MAZZETTI
Published: July 2, 2009
WASHINGTON — Current and former top Central Intelligence Agency officers have appeared before a federal grand jury in Virginia as part of an 18-month investigation into the agency’s destruction of 92 videotapes depicting the brutal interrogations of two Qaeda detainees.
C.I.A. Interrogations: The witnesses recently called by the special prosecutor, former government officials said, include the agency’s top officer in London and Porter J. Goss, who was C.I.A. director when the tapes were destroyed in November 2005.
The grand jury testimony of C.I.A. officers is further evidence that, despite President Obama’s pledge not to punish agency operatives for their role in the detention and interrogation of terrorism suspects, the shadow of the controversial program still looms over the agency’s daily operations.

#1176 | (I watched a good part, especially the last two sets, of this today...The best I've seen since the days of Borg.. ) Peerless Federer stands alone
LONDON (Reuters) - In the end Andy Roddick, like the rest of Wimbledon, had no choice but to embrace the greatness of Roger Federer.
In one of the most heart-stopping and unforgettable finals seen in a grand slam arena, Federer held his nerve for four hours and 16 astonishing minutes before finally subduing Roddick 5-7 7-6 7-6 3-6 16-14 to claim the trophy he cherishes above all for the sixth time.
As a Roddick miss-hit forehand sailed long, Center Court exploded into a roar of deafening cheers and a jubilant Federer leapt high in the air knowing that he was now the proud owner of a record 15th grand slam title. http://www.reuters.com/article/domes...52946020090705 | | Community Moderator with 25,730 posts. | | Join Date: Jul 2003 Location: Eugene, Oregon Experience: Still kickin' |

#1177 | FDA May Take Vicodin And Percocet Off The Market
Bad news for Dr. Greg House and other, non-fictional chronic pain patients. The FDA advisory panel that met yesterday about the effects of excessive doses of acetaminophen made another recommendation to the FDA—to take popular painkillers Vicodin and Percocet (and their generic versions) off the market because of the effect both drugs can have on the liver when taken for extended periods. The FDA will most likely follow this recommendation. http://consumerist.com/5305155/fda-m...yline=true&s=x | | Distinguished Member with 14,282 posts. | | Join Date: Nov 2001 Location: Republic of Texas Experience: Advanced |

I currently (for back pain) swap between Vicodin and Vicoprofen, the latter is combined with Ibuprofen in lieu of acetaminophen, but causes problems with my stomach/intestines if used for more than a day or two. I'll not be a happy camper if either is lost to use. | | Distinguished Member with 24,714 posts. | | Join Date: Feb 2005 Location: You will never know Experience: Depends on the definition |

Also depending upon the age who gives a hoot if it damages the liver. If quality of life is sacrificed I think most would take the risk. | | Distinguished Member with 25,423 posts. | | Join Date: Jun 2002 Location: Venice, FL Experience: Intermediate |

I not only got rid of my back pain, I got arches too. I had flat feet til I was 65. Don't have them any more. Love to see that almost hourglass footprint when I come out of the shower. Love it!
I highly recommend the book!

Label the side effects, and allow people to make up their own minds. In 2006 300,000 people died from prescription drugs. No one died from marijuana.
El crapo tappo. What does the pursuit of happiness mean? Stroke your bank account and your tv? I wonder how many of those 300,000 are still voting?

They had a spot on NPR about this topic last week... interesting stuff. Mainly the dilemma is doctors are absolutely petrified of coming under investigation by the DEA, even if every prescription they write is perfectly legitimate. Jailtime or not in an investigation, their reputation is everything, and simply being accused can ruin them. So when the options on a drug are between making it less available versus monitoring it's distribution more closely, guess who loses? The patient, either way. | | Distinguished Member with 24,714 posts. | | Join Date: Feb 2005 Location: You will never know Experience: Depends on the definition |

Allow people to sign off if more is desired. How about a little self determination and responsibility by the patient. Once again it is all about the govt deciding what is best for us and coming up with a one size fits all solution.
