What is the point of a reality TV show?
Heh, another one about TV

...

So yeah, I was just thinking. Reality TV is such a pure waste of time! What is the point of it... oh, erm, to let people watch you live? Yeah, well we already live.. and if we wanted to go camping, we would. If we wanted to have sex, we would. If we wanted to be followed around by a flippin' camera everywhere we went and questioned about everything we did, we would. So... what is the point? It gets so boooring... old and they try to invent new "twists" that just make them corny. I was watching TV yesterday and what do you know. A commercial for Big Brother Special All-Stars edition comes on. "The Biggest, The Sexiest, The best of them all.." ..."And there's a twist! What you've all been waiting for! agh!!!" . So corny. Man I hate it.

There's so many of them too. That's all that's on TV nowadays. Flippin' reality TV and Family Guy/Simpsons/South Park ... .

Survivor for instance. They're not really surviving. I bet you a million dollars they are fed every night, they get showers, etc. and they are actors.. otherwise they'd be filthy! And hungry!

Man, I guess this is just a rant, but I hope someone feels the same way as I do. Please!

Tell me the point!

Commercial Television - commercial decision.

Make money.

- If that ceases to be the case the program would be scrapped.

As long as there are advertisers willing to put money forward, this cr@p will be screened.

eggsactly .....the point isn't all that "high drama" of those ten minute segments....it's those little segments in between that really matter.....kind of a high tech shell game.

Oh how I have been just DYING for someone to go off on "reality" TV.

First of all, apparently you never have watched more than one episode of Survivor. They ARE dirty and hungry and unshaven and disgusting. They WIN meals and showers. Because it's a GAME!

You see, there are all sorts of shows that fall under the "reality" umbrella. Pretty much anything that is unscripted is deemed reality and just like any other genre of film, music, or TV.... some is going to be crap. But on the other side of that coin, some of it is really good. There are also different kinds of reality shows. Some of them are purely voyeuristic (Big Brother, Extreme Makeover Home Edition), some that are competitive (Survivor, Amazing Race), and still others that are interactive competitive (American Idol). It's not all the same concept. Not even close. That's like saying The Cosby Show is the same as Law & Order. Very different shows.

Ever watched The Amazing Race? It's fascinating to watch and I actually do learn things from it. Some of us really enjoy the way humans work and the way they interact with each other. To me, that is part of what makes The Amazing Race so much fun to watch. That's also what makes Survivor so much fun.... over 39 days out in the wilderness, they form a little mini-society. It's more than just running through mud and voting someone off the island.... it's society building and human nature.

Big Brother is total crap. I'll grant you that. But some people enjoy the voyeuristic aspect of it. That doesn't mean YOU have to enjoy it or even understand why someone else does.

And while you may have all the time in the world to go out and do whatever you feel like doing, I have a six year old who goes to bed at 8:00 and I like my TV.

Ciber and Di nailed it. Reality TV is interesting for people who like to see people interact with others and how they meet the environment/challenge at hand. That means drama.

There is no 'point' to reality shows other than the obvious one of making money for the producers, getting their 15 minutes for the participants. The effect for the viewer, though, is to reinforce notions of self: no matter how stupid/fat/ugly/incompetent at house improvement/narcisistic/sociopathic etc you might be, there is always someone 'out there' ready to expose their inadequacies in pursuit of exposure and 'fame'. If you watch reality shows, examine yourself.

That's like saying someone who plays video games has deep psychological issues and only plays them to avoid real life. Dude, it's just entertainment. You can't do in-depth psychological analysis on every viewer and participant. Get over your smugass self.

And just because you don't find entertaining what I find entertaining doesn't make you a better person. Get down off your high horse and quit judging people. No really. TRY IT! Every form of entertainment is out there to make money. That includes music, movies, video games, and the computer you're using right now.... just to name a few. If you don't like things that make money for some producer or Wizard of Oz behind the scenes dude, go live in a tree. Seriously.
