Angry Canada saves jobs and kills thousands
Asbestos kept off global list of toxic substances

Quote:
GENEVA (Reuters) - Chrysotile asbestos, a known human carcinogen, will remain off a global "watch list" of toxic substances for at least two more years after countries led by Canada blocked consensus in United Nations talks on Friday.
Quote:
Canada, whose French-speaking Quebec province is a major asbestos producer and exporter, led opposition to its addition to the list, according to environmentalists tracking the talks.
Quote:
Canadian officials say putting chrysotile asbestos on the list would be tantamount to banning international trade in it and threaten jobs.
Quote:
"At least 200,000 workers will be killed by asbestos disease before the proposal to list asbestos can be tabled again," said Laurie Kazan-Allen of the International Ban Asbestos Secretariat, who called the failure to act "truly tragic."
Asbestos has been known as a carcinogen for years and years.

In the past, Canada has given homeowners tax rebates to remove asbestos from their homes. Millions and millions were spent to remove asbestos from schools, hospitals, and other public buildings; and gloves, a mask, and fully-protective clothing must be worn to remove it. This action by the Canadian government is completely hypocritical. The asbestos industry should be shut down. Steps should have been taken accordingly years ago. Those suffering from asbestos related disease should be compensated generously by the Quebec government for their blatant disregard for the health and welfare of their customers and their people.
But, if it's good for the economy, I can't really tell you if they'd have a case....

I think you're pointing your disgust at the wrong area. The Canadian gov't probably took that stand because of all the " heat " it was taking from Quebec. Quebec's economy is in a state of kaos and more people would end up on the welfare rolls. Not only that but the federal gov't goes to great lengths not to upset the apple cart as they want to see Quebec stay a part of Canada. It wouldn't take much for the old debate to heat up once again and if it did you might ba a country all by your lonesome.

Wow... I didn't even realise they made Asbestos any more, let alone actually used it in anything! Here in the UK asbestos has been banned for years. I don't think we're allowed to use it in anything at all!

This is a poor show from Canada. It does appear as though jobs have been put before health on this occasion. What do people actually use asbestos for these days? (serious question, I honestly don't know)

Though I'm sure Canada wasn't acting alone in opposing this move to put asbestos on the toxic register, one would have thought that a developed, modern country such as yourselves would recognise the risk to health of everyone concerned, and been part of the motion to put it on the register.

Am I right in assuming that it was political pressure rather than an actual belief that asbestos is safe, that led Canada to take this position?

Chris.

The Quebecers just have to threaten to separate again. In order to get what they want. And all they need is a wimp in government.

Sorry Wimpy for using part of your username there. But it just fits right in.

And about asbestos....What's wrong with fiberglass pink. Or if they need something to get into small places, there must be something else that can be used besides asbestos.
