Congressman Keith Ellison: Swearing in on the Qur'an
What are your thoughts on Congressman Ellison of Minnesota being sworn into office holding the Qur'an instead of the Bible?

*****

Incoming Rep. Keith Ellison intends to use a Quran at his unofficial swearing-in ceremony. But the Minnesota Democrat is being criticized by some who say he should use a Bible. Ellison is the first Muslim elected to Congress.

If it's his religion, that's what he should be sworn in on.

There's really no point swearing a person into office on a book they don't believe. Might as well be a stack of national geographics for all that matters.

Just throw all religious books out of politics, and the problem is solved.

I personally believe they need to just use the bible. I am a Christian so of course that is what I'm going to believe. (proud of it too) By the way the USA was founded on Christian principles.

I'm not 100% positive, but if you read the constitution some of it is based on the holy bible. Don't believe me? Watch Hal Lindsey on Sky Angel network. (He spoke about it in the past, I don't know if he will in future episodes.)

I think the guy that criticized him is a moron. I'm ashamed that Virgil Goode is a public servant. Only a man of true ignorance would say the things he said about Ellison.

It is fitting that Ellison will be using Thomas Jefferson's copy of the quran.

I'm with chicon on with one, I don't think any religious book should be part of the swearing in ceremony. But that is just personal idealism. I guess religion is here to stay.

Shouldn't make a difference -- it's the oath that counts. The use of religious text is to solidify that oath to the faith of the individual taking it.

Hm. Since everyone else is too nice and I don't care, let me be the one to say that what you said is pretty stupid. This isn't about what YOU believe. This is about what Representative Ellison believes. The whole point of having a Bible present at the ceremony is so that they swear on something that is sacred.... TO THAT PERSON. If you swore on a Koran, it wouldn't matter now would it?

I swear, all of you religious people need to hurry up and figure out that you all believe the same thing so quit acting like you've got it all figured out and no one else does.

That being said, I would totally swear on a stack of National Geographics. That yellow trim defies you to lie. Just try it, bucko. NG knows where they can get a herd of angry wildebeasts and.... AND a giant category 5 hurricane.
