It's a political trial.
If the Italian prosecutors were impartial, they should ask the Egyptian government to extradite the responsibles of the tortures.

Italian justice and government are completely alienated since judges were given extra-power to prosecute politicians involved in the Mafia.
One of the consequences of that situation is that some judges have their political agenda and therefore, they have political targets.
And the CIA is one of them, probably since the controversial killing in Iraq of the Italian officer who freed a journalist.
It looks like a mere low-belt revenge coming from the Italian secret services : it is not by chance that the judges have a complete list of CIA operatives.

The Italians are really riled up about the U.S. plans to expand our Army base in Italy!

Saturday, 17 February 2007, 03:38 GMT

Anti-US protest planned in Italy

By David Willey
BBC News, Rome

Tens of thousands of Italians are planning to demonstrate against the extension of a US army base in the northern city of Vicenza.

The protest organisers say the majority of local residents are opposed to the expansion of the base.

They say Prime Minister Romano Prodi has ignored the strong local objections to the site's enlargement.

There are fears that extremist fringe groups will try to cause violence at what is planned as a peaceful march.

The Americans established a military presence in Vicenza over half a century ago.

President George W Bush wants to beef up the base, the headquarters of the 173rd Airborne Brigade, by transferring from Germany to Italy another 2,000 US soldiers.

This would bring the total number of American troops stationed in Vicenza to nearly 5,000.

The centre-left government in Rome is embarrassingly split between those who want to respect the decision of the previous centre-right coalition to agree to Washington's request, and those who would like to see the Americans out.

Surely, some of them are embarrassed. How could it be otherwise knowing the amount of money the US government pays to its Italian ally ?
If the Vicenza base is to be closed, not only Italy will lose money but also thousands of jobs.
In the EU, Italy is one of the countries having the worst economic system.

Good morning Chicon! *HUGS* Have a great weekend!

About the Italian government...good luck when they see tens of thousands protesting in the streets today...best to consider economics than the voices of the people...it's not like Bush listens to Americans either!

Hi Angie,

The Italian government, unlike the French, is used and trained to protesting marchs.
Before sending troops in Iraq, there were more than 8 million Italian protesters against the war.

Have a nice day !

I'm all in favour of American troops in Italy, though I firmly believe the US agenda is for socio academic reasons, rather than military as such. Look at it this way. Those American GIs will return to the US knowing the true meaning of the words Style and sophistication .. and that can't be a bad thing in anyones book

When I was younger...I loved Italian men! Hubba Hubba! Me and a few friends would go to Windsor, Canada...to their own "Little Italy" to meet them...or at the dances at the Italian Hall here in the states...mostly Sicilians! Ahhh...those were the days! Nice looking men!

Of course their parents didn't like us American girls around their "little boys"! We used to go into a pool hall that the OLDER Italian men considered off limits to GIRLS...just to bug 'em!
