Learning from a simple model for the greenhouse effect
Article here.

So how simple can you make a model that contains the basic greenhouse physics? Pretty simple actually. You need to account for the solar radiation coming in, the longwave radiation coming from the surface, and some absorption/radiation of longwave radiation in the atmosphere. There will be mathematics, but hopefully it won't be too painful.

Punxsutawney Phil aught to be predicting global warming. He has every bit as much talent for that as predicting the early spring, and perhaps even more talent than Al Gore and other left wing alarmists.

LOL, yeah I'll bet Phil is every bit as accrate, maybe every year we can take Al Gore out of his mansion, if he sees his shadow then its 2 more months of global warming.

No, I was merely attempting to give you a chuckle.

The double standard in "thread-X" is palpable.

The treatment which I have been given for having an opposing position is remarkably hypocritical.

I don't blame anyone for avoiding association with my perspective on the matter.
It doesn't take a rocket surgeon to see how maligned one gets for daring to point out the fact that evolution is a religion requiring every bit as much faith as any other religion.

Oh no!!! Not the shrooms!!!

Sure they're not dying early due to the FROST?
Does the Fly Agaric know when Christmas is? Perhaps by the number of shopping days left.

We can all rest assured that climate change problems will be solved by the Live Earth global series of concerts on 7 July.

The London concert will feature cutting edge acts like James Blunt, Genesis and Duran Duran, as well as wizened sex godess Madonna and the most over-rated band currently trotting out the same tune for decades, Red Hot Chili Peppers. Bargain price of £55 though (I paid this just to see Brian Wilson a couple of years ago)

You can't doubt the scope of the enterprise though: "Live Earth is a monumental music event that will bring together more than 2 billion people to combat the climate crisis. Live Earth’s 24 hours of music across 7 continents will deliver a call to action and the solutions needed to answer the call. Live Earth marks the beginning of a multi-year campaign to move individuals, corporations and governments to take action. Live Earth is joining with The Climate Group, Stop Climate Chaos and The Alliance for Climate Protection on this effort."

Of course, another view is that this even will just be another vehicle for the rampant egotism which infects the music industry, and could even, although I hate myself for suggesting it, be possibly more about trying to save an ailing industry.

Bu that's just cynical: the Live 8 concerts of two years ago have made poverty history, haven't they?

FYI,
This is a copy & paste - definitely worth a read.

Quote:
Philip Stott is an Emeritus Professor from the University of London, UK. For the last 18 years he was the editor of the Journal of Biogeography.

His words, via ABC News:

Quote:
From the Babylon of Gilgamesh to the post-Eden of Noah, every age has viewed climate change cataclysmically, as retribution for human greed and sinfulness.

In the 1970s, the fear was “global cooling.” The Christian Science Monitor then declaimed, “Warning: Earth’s climate is changing faster than even experts expect,” while The New York Times announced, “A major cooling of the climate is widely considered inevitable.” Sound familiar? Global warming represents the latest doom-laden “crisis,” one demanding sacrifice to Gaia for our wicked fossil-fuel-driven ways.

But neither history nor science bolsters such an apocalyptic faith.

Extreme weather events are ever present, and there is no evidence of systematic increases. Outside the tropics, variability should decrease in a warmer world. If this is a “crisis,” then the world is in permanent “crisis,” but will be less prone to “crisis” with warming.

Our so-called “crisis” is thus neither a product of current observations nor of projections.

Herein lies the moral danger behind global warming hysteria. Each day, 20,000 people in the world die of waterborne diseases. Half a billion people go hungry. A child is orphaned by AIDS every seven seconds. This does not have to happen. We allow it while fretting about “saving the planet.” What is wrong with us that we downplay this human misery before our eyes and focus on events that will probably not happen even a hundred years hence? We know that the greatest cause of environmental degradation is poverty; on this, we can and must act.

The global warming “crisis” is misguided. In hubristically seeking to “control” climate, we foolishly abandon age-old adaptations to inexorable change. There is no way we can predictably manage this most complex of coupled, nonlinear chaotic systems. The inconvenient truth is that “doing something” (emitting gases) at the margins and “not doing something” (not emitting gases) are equally unpredictable.

Climate change is a norm, not an exception. It is both an opportunity and a challenge. The real crises for 4 billion people in the world remain poverty, dirty water and the lack of a modern energy supply. By contrast, global warming represents an ecochondria of the pampered rich.
While we’re on the subject of the ecochondria of the pampered rich, let’s re-focus on the High Holy Goracle. The global warming hysteria is far more than bad science - it is a willful, intentional, premeditated lie. Think about that while you watch Al Gore being nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize. It is a lie, a false front, a facade of one-world Socialism being sold to unwitting taxpayers and citizens as a way to confront and demolish Capitalism and Personal Liberty while having the appearance of “saving the planet”.
