This is the most interesting part of it for me. I'm always surprised at how little actual merit is present in science. You would think, by your(mine) high-school readings into the topic, and by watching enough of Hollywood's take on it(I have my own opions about
that topic, see my sig for proof - In short, now that Bollywood has overcome their fear of non-musicals, Hollywood's days are numbered

), that science is always and unerringly a pure meritocracy. Unfortunately, such is not the case.
