U.S. Tourist in Costa Rica Kills Mugger

By MARIANELA JIMENEZ
Associate Press Writer

SAN JOSE, Costa Rica (AP) -- A tour bus of U.S. senior citizens defended themselves against a group of alleged muggers, sending two of them fleeing and killing a third in the Atlantic coast city of Limon, police said on Thursday.

One of the tourists _ a retired member of the U.S. military aged about 70 _ put assailant Warner Segura in a head lock and broke his clavicle after the 20-year-old and two other men armed with a knife and gun held up their tour bus Wednesday, said Luis Hernandez, the police chief of Limon, 80 miles east of San Jose.

The two other men fled when the 12 senior citizens started defending themselves. The tourists then drove Segura to the Red Cross where the man was declared dead. The Red Cross also treated one of the tourists for an anxiety attack, Hernandez said.

The tourists left on their Carnival cruise after the incident and Hernandez said authorities do not plan to press any charges against them, saying they acted in self defense.

Good for them

How embarassing for the 20 year old though...being killed by a 70 year old man. I mean...I guess he's not to worried about it now, but heh...

The guy's lucky he didn't do that here in the states ... he'd probably be arrested.

He wouldn't if he shot him instead of breaking his neck.

I frankly don't think his actions were justified unless he thought his life was in danger--don't know enough of the facts to determine that.

Without all the facts , and judging from post-- this man was entirely justified in taking deadly action -with hand or weapon.
There are three types in this world IMO ---victims --predators-- and those who are unwilling to be victim ,or rely on mercy of predators---this story seems? to show this.
If story is true --these criminals were not just thieves--but predators/potentially killers.
Once a weapon is introduced --all bets are off.
I am not lawyer , but know a little about justified force {mostly FLA law } because I am licenced to carry firearm. Killing to protect money /property ect is a problem.
Killing for defense is understood legally.
If someone was simply stealing from me ---no problem-- who would kill for $$$ ???.
BUT, if someone pulls gun or weapon -- all bets are off. Only a fool would expect a person who would threaten life to show any mercy.
If I were on his bus and armed { I don't know how to break neck } as soon as this indvidual took his eyes away --- I would have put 3 in his chest.
Once you pull gun or knife --- line has been crossed --no return.
If story is accurate , more power to old fart who broke neck--- no real loss to world. >f

99 times out of a 100, its you that gets killed if you attempt "self help." In the vast majority of these situations, people are robbed and that's the end of it.
