Unhappy Tony Snow - Cancer Returns
Tests show Snow's cancer has returned
By JENNIFER LOVEN -- Associated Press Writer
Last Updated 8:42 am PDT Tuesday, March 27, 2007

WASHINGTON (AP) Presidential spokesman Tony Snow's surgery to remove a small growth showed that his cancer has returned and spread to his liver, the White House said Tuesday.

President Bush, making a brief statement to reporters in the Rose Garden, struck an optimistic tone that echoed how aides said Snow was feeling. The president spoke with Snow early Tuesday, and said he looks forward to the day that his spokesman "comes back to the White House and briefs the press corps on the decisions that I'm making."

"His attitude is, one, that he is not going to let this whip him, and he's upbeat. My attitude is that we need to pray for him, and for his family," Bush said. "And so my message to Tony is, 'Stay strong; a lot of people love you and care for you and will pray for you.' "

Snow, 51, had his entire colon removed in 2005 and underwent six months of chemotherapy after being diagnosed with colon cancer. A small growth was discovered last year in his lower right pelvic area and, after months of monitoring, tests showed that it had grown slightly. It was removed Monday.

Doctors determined the growth was cancerous, and found during the surgery that his cancer had metastasized, or spread, to his liver, White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said.

She said Snow is comfortable and feeling fine after his surgery and has pledged to aggressively fight the disease with an as-yet-to-be-determined chemotherapy treatment course. He will be in the hospital recovering from the surgery, a major procedure, for about a week.

"He said he's going to beat it again," Perino said in an emotional morning briefing with White House reporters. "When I talked to him, he was in very good spirits."

Blood tests and a PET imaging scan had come back negative for cancer before the surgery. Snow announced Friday that he had opted to have the growth removed "out an aggressive sense of caution."

Some 153,760 Americans will be diagnosed with colorectal cancer this year, and more than 52,000 will die. In about half of colon cancer patients, the disease eventually will spread to the liver, the most common site of metastasis, according to the National Cancer Institute.

How long they survive depends on how much of the liver is affected, and how many other parts of the body are, too.

In a small proportion of patients, the liver cancer is contained to a small enough area that it can be cut out. If surgery is not an option, doctors may try to limit the cancer's spread through the liver with radiofrequency ablation, using radiofrequency energy to blast the tumors.

Chemotherapy is a mainstay when the cancer has spread to more than one site, with the hope of controlling, even shrinking, tumors to prolong life.

You are correct. Most people don't know that the part of the liver where the cancer is can be removed and the liver, unlike any other organ, actually grows back.

While I wish Tony Snow all the best and a quick recovery, I do believe Dana Perino is doing a bang up job. While I may not like what she is saying, I certainly enjoy watching her say it!

White House Press Secretary Snow Resigns
Snow to Step Down Sept. 14; Replaced by Dana Perino

By Joe Holley
Washington Post Staff Writer
Friday, August 31, 2007; 1:40 PM

White House Press Secretary Tony Snow said today that he plans to step down Sept. 14 and President Bush said he will "sadly accept" his chief spokesman's resignation.

Snow will be replaced by his deputy, Dana Perino.

Snow, 52, a former journalist and Fox News talk show host, has signaled in recent weeks that he probably would not finish the remainder of the Bush presidency, primarily because of financial concerns. He was leaving, he said today, "because I ran out of money."

Snow, the father of three children, earns $168,000 a year as the White House spokesman but made considerably more as an anchor for "Fox News Sunday" and a political analyst for the Fox News Channel, which he joined in 1996. He also hosted "The Tony Snow Show" on Fox News Radio.

He was named press secretary on April 26, 2006, replacing Scott McClellan.

Snow was treated for colon cancer in 2005. In March of this year, doctors discovered that the cancer had returned and had spread to his liver. He said today that he had finished a regimen of chemotherapy two weeks ago and that his health has stabilized.

"There are no new tumors, and that's what you want," he said.

Appearing in the White House briefing room with Snow and Perino, Bush told reporters that "it's been a joy to watch him spar with you." He also mentioned Snow's illness, saying "he'll battle cancer and win."

Turning to Snow, the president then said: "I love you, and I wish you all the best."

Tony Snow's cancer was not why he left the WH, it was to earn more money. He had to take out a loan to take on the job of WH press secretary, but it did not pay him enough to support his family.

So, he is now going to go on the talk circuit where he can earn more money giving speeches.

Tony Snow is a class act. Never understood why he would want to be associated with the likes of George Bush.
