The Cost of Electing a President of the United States
GW Bush spent approximately $368M to be elected POTUS over Kerry at $328M in 2004. That's nearly $700M total.

It is projected that the 2008 POTUS election will cost about $400M to be elected. Probably nearer to $800M total between the two candidates.

That's outrageous!

It would certainly be more impressive is someone could get elected by spending less! If only they could produce a balanced budget!

Why do U.S. presidential candidates need so much money?
Article here.

The 2008 election is projected to be the first $Billion election.

Its shame that for all of that money, that is the best person really the one finally chosen?
Or even the best choices available to be chosen from?

I would be happy if only our government were run in a non-partisan way with a balanced budget.

Most Americans tend to view our government as "of the people, for the people, and by the people" - i.e. the way Lincoln said it in the Gettyburg Address. Nowhere in the Declaration of Independence, Constitution or the Bill of Rights does it say that.

Why do we need politics to run the government? Because in the representative form of government we have, good politics is the art of compromise. If our national resources had not been squandered on the war in Iraq, we might have been more able to help the good people of New Orleans after Katrina hit, and look what happened.

Its one thing to be perpared for any contingency, but quite another to not be able due to mistakes in decisions past made for all the wrong reasons.
