Right. And those oil lamps are so old-fashioned.

I believe the thread starter is referring to the new rules soon to come out in the UK (from E.U. guidelines) that standard candescent (e.g. 60 or 100W bulbs) are to be completely phased out (and made illegal to sell) for new energy saving bulbs like these:

So, you should buy them now because they'll save you money in the long run. If you've already got enough money, buy them anyway & I'll take the savings off your hands.

I tried them and I didn't like them. They are not as bright as incandescent bulbs, they get dimmer with age, and their brightness is affected by temperature.

As for eliminating incandescent bulbs altogether, I also use incandescent bulbs in unheated buildings like my pole barn. Flourescents do not perform well in extreme conditions of temperature and humidity. When I step into a building and flip on the switch, I want the lights to come on instantly every time. I know from experience you cannot count on that with flourescents in extreme conditions.

Also no one is talking about the problem of environmental contamination from used flourescents.

Oh alright then.

"A coal power plant powering an incandescent light bulb instead of a CFL will release more mercury into the air than is actually contained in a CFL itself. Although the CFL mercury issue is a concern, the net result of mercury released into our environment, given the reduced power requirements of a compact fluorescent bulb over its lifetime, remains less."

Have you bought any recently? Newer models seem much brighter than they were 3 or 4 years ago. I agree when they came out they were disappointing and about as dim as a busload of Iranians on their way to a Maritime Laws convention.
