BAGHDAD (Reuters) - A suicide bomber on a bicycle killed 30 Iraqi policemen doing their morning exercises at a base north of Baghdad on Monday, in one of the deadliest strikes on security forces in months.

The attack was a reminder that despite a U.S.-led crackdown that has killed hundreds of Shi'ite and Sunni Arab militants and sharply reduced levels of violence in Iraq, groups such as al Qaeda are determined to carry on fighting.

saw on the news last night more reports that insurgency is down. kind of coinciding with the so called surge in June.

how the heck does that happen?

This must be an anomaly.

Has to be.

The Dems said it was a lost cause.

First killer badgers, now sharks 200km inland

A 2m shark has been caught in a river in southern Iraq more than 200km from the sea - prompting locals to accuse American troops of dumping it there ...... British forces in Iraq were blamed for the alleged discovery of killer badgers who preyed on Iraqis - although the British have denied any such treachery and doubt that such creatures even exist

http://www.news.com.au/couriermail/s...013016,00.html

And more about the killer badgers .....

http://www.iht.com/articles/2007/07/30/news/badger.php

Shame on the coalition forces for these fiendish tactics.

Of course the insurgency is down---dahhhhhhhhhhhh---Is Iraq going to be a functioning state in the near future? Thats the question, and anyone in his right mind knows it won't happen.

well I like to take things as they go.

One step at a time.

As I recall the Dems were saying the surge would be an utter failure. Doom and gloom and get the hell out at all cost yesterday.

I have no idea what is going to work. But this is better than taking a step backwards is it not?
Now the political attacks on the military side of the Police Action in Iraq is being changed to an attack on the Iraq government. another example of an issue that is not going to be simple or quickly corrected. But makes for great fodder by the nay saying Dems.

Bottom line is we can whine about Bush getting into this mess and cut and run or stick with it a bit longer to see if we can make things better. Now that we are into the thick of it i can't leaving as being a good option for anybody. other than the Dems who have no clue about anything and who lied their way into control of congress.

I don't want to spend any more of our treasure, both material and human for a pie-in-the-sky hope that someday, Shia will live in peace with Sunni and that they will like us. Not another cent nor another life. Afghanistan is a different story altogether.

This interesting that you think "Afghanistan is a different story altogether"

That country has a history of problems that seem to indicate it is another bottomless pit to invest anything on.

Full of lots of local tribal lords, factions, or whatever one wants to label them. What makes you think there is anything there that can be dealt with?

I keep hearing Armageddon is coming.

Me thinks that if we can keep it localized and contained then the mideast would be a good place to test that theory.

Diplomats Upset Over Forced Postings to Iraq
http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/110107O.shtml
Matthew Lee reports for The Associated Press, "Several hundred US diplomats vented anger and frustration Wednesday about the State Department's decision to force foreign service officers to take jobs in Iraq, with some likening it to a 'potential death sentence.'"

Doesn't look like they're falling for the spin that the violence is down!

That is because they can't rely on Blackwater to protect them anymore. Blackwater has not lost a diplomat in their care yet!

Revealed: Rumsfeld memos urged staff to 'keep elevating the terrorism threat'

From the Desk of Donald Rumsfeld.

By Robin Wright

In a series of internal musings and memos to his staff, then-Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld argued that Muslims avoid "physical labor" and wrote of the need to "keep elevating the threat," "link Iraq to Iran" and develop "bumper sticker statements" to rally public support for an increasingly unpopular war.
