The Open Mouth Insert Foot Thread
Open mouth, insert foot disease happens so frequently it deserves a thread of it's own to post the occurrences in.

Starting off with:

Candidate Apologizes For 'Buckwheat' Remark
The Associated Press

HOUMA, La. -- A state representative in a runoff election infuriated civil rights leaders after she ended a conversation with the mother of the NAACP's local president by saying, "Talk to you later, Buckwheat."

State Rep. Carla Blanchard Dartez, of Morgan City, acknowledged she made the remark during a Thursday night telephone conversation with Hazel Boykin to thank her for driving voters to the polls.

Buckwheat, a black child character in the "Little Rascals" comedies of the 1930s and '40s, is viewed as a racial stereotype demeaning to black people.

George Bush loses close run for "Foot in Mouth"
Tue Dec 11, 2007 12:55pm
By Paul Majendie

LONDON (Reuters) - Former England soccer manager Steve McClaren fought off tough competition from U.S. President George W. Bush to win a dreaded "Foot in Mouth" award on Tuesday from the Plain English campaign.

He was hailed for a supreme example of gobbledegook in talking about star player Wayne Rooney: "He is inexperienced but he's experienced in terms of what he's been through."

George W.Bush came second for "All I can tell you is that when the governor calls, I answer his phone."

Plain English Campaign spokesman Ben Beer told Reuters: "We thought it was a bit obvious to honor Bush as he comes up with them every day."

Every year, the pressure group hands out a raft of awards mocking incomprehensible jargon in a battle to clear the linguistic fog that so often envelops the English language.

Magazine Cancels Award For Shock-Talk Pioneer
By Paul Farhi
Washington Post Staff Writer
Saturday, January 19, 2008; Page C01

Never at a loss to find things to fume about, some of the nation's radio talk-show hosts are now fuming about the treatment of one of their own -- a controversial talk personality whose lifetime achievement award was suddenly revoked this week by an industry trade magazine.

Several hosts, most prominently Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh, have been howling in recent days about Radio & Records magazine's second thoughts about bestowing the award on Bob Grant, a legendary New York broadcaster who helped pioneer the outrageous, combative style that has dominated talk radio for decades.

Grant, 78, was set to receive the accolade in March at a conference sponsored by the magazine in Washington. That is, he was until Radio & Records heard from a longtime Grant nemesis named Scott Pellegrino.

Upon learning of the magazine's plans earlier this week, Pellegrino sent e-mails to about 70 of its employees and various executives of its parent company, the Nielsen Co. The e-mails highlighted some of Grant's more unsavory comments over the years, including a series of racially insensitive statements that culminated in his firing by a New York station more than a decade ago.

The e-mails appear to have sparked a backlash against Grant within the company -- a reaction that parallels the revolt within NBC and CBS Radio last year that led to Don Imus's firing for comments about the Rutgers women's basketball team (Imus was recently hired by WABC, the same station that fired Grant in 1996 and rehired him in August of last year.)

Grant, whose radio career spans 60 years, has stoked outrage and generated spasms of publicity by making derogatory comments about Latinos, gays and African Americans. He has called blacks "screaming savages" and "sub-humanoids," and denigrated then-New York Mayor David Dinkins, an African American, by saying he looked like "the men's room attendant at the 21 Club."

Said Pellegrino yesterday, "There's no question in my mind that Bob Grant is a racist. . . . He's famous for one thing: hating blacks. It should be on his gravestone."

LOL My friend is a volunteer for an Historic theater, and on his first night after remodelling said "I hope you enjoy the new wider seats", then realizing he implied they had big butts!

Advertisers Drop Savage Over Hateful Remarks, USO Hints At Suit
Sam Stein
The Huffington Post

At least four major firms have pulled advertising from Michael Savage's nationally syndicated radio show following a campaign highlighting his inflammatory rhetoric. One other company, Geico insurance, is expected to follow suit.

The campaign, launched recently by Brave New Films, generated thousands of calls urging advertisers on the Savage Nation show to sever financial ties to the widely popular (and frequently offensive) talk host.

In less than a week, four agreed to pull their ads from the show, including Union Bank of California (whose representative says they were advertisers on the Savage show by mistake and were glad to be taken off), Intuit, Chattem, ITT Technical Institute.

The campaign by Greenwald mirrors an earlier initiative taken on behalf of the Council on American-Islamic Relations. In both cases, Savage's invective was used against him as fuel for advertisers to rescind their financial support.

Highlights of the radio host's statements include:

• To "save the United States," lawmakers should institute "outright ban on Muslim immigration" and on "the construction of mosques."
• "90 percent of the people on the Nobel Committee are into child pornography and molestation, according to the latest scientific studies."
• The U.S. Senate is "more vicious and more histrionic than ever, specifically because women have been injected into" it.
• Adherents of Islam would do well to "take your religion and shove it up your behind" because "I'm sick of you."

Homeless Vets Prepare To Block O'Reilly's Shot
January 31, 2008 01:59 AM

Wednesday afternoon, John Edwards suspended his candidacy for President, vowing to "never forget" the poverty-stricken Americans he so passionately stood up for, and beseeching the remaining candidates - indeed, all Americans - to continue the work that he termed "the cause of [his] life." This afternoon in New York City, some of that work will resolutely continue, as a group of homeless veterans - one of the segments of the population of forgotten Americans that Edwards spoke of so often on the stump - will swarm FOX News Channel's Studios to bring their fight to Bill O'Reilly, the millionaire celebrity host of The O'Reilly Factor.

O'Reilly, who regularly defamed Edwards as a phony, has a lot to answer for. In attacks on the former North Carolina Senator, O'Reilly has repeatedly belittled his compassion, issued inflammatory statements and mocking attacks, and denied both the "existence and significance" of homeless veterans. As recently as January 16, O'Reilly took to the airwaves to rain ridicule upon Edwards, saying, "Well, we're still looking for all the veterans sleeping under the bridges,...so if you find anybody, let us know." As we reported two days later, Robert Greenwald and his crew at Brave New Films did exactly that.

Five More Advertisers Abandon Michael Savage’s Hate-Filled Radio Show

In November 2007, the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) kicked off a campaign urging “radio listeners of all faiths to contact companies that advertise on Michael Savage’s nationally-syndicated radio program to express their concerns” about the conservative radio host’s anti-minority tirades. Since then, Brave New Films and a coalition of interfaith leaders have joined CAIR in the campaign under the banner of Hate Hurts America.

Savage responded to the campaign by suing CAIR for copyright infringement and Fox News rose to his defense. But the advertisers have been paying attention to the Hate Hurts America initiative. On Friday, the group announced that five more advertisers have dropped “The Savage Nation”:
