Benazir Bhutto's Assassin
Benazir Bhutto assassinated
http://www.cnn.com/2007/WORLD/asiapc...tto/index.html

RAWALPINDI, Pakistan (CNN) -- Pakistan's former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto was assassinated Thursday outside a large gathering of her supporters where a suicide bomber also killed at least 22, doctors and a spokesman for her party said.
It was not immediately clear if Bhutto died from shots fired before the blast, or from wounds caused by bomb shrapnel.

President Pervez Musharraf held an emergency meeting in the hours after the death, according to state media.

He said the killers were the same extremists that Pakistan is fighting a war against, and announced three days of national mourning.

Poll Question: Who is responsible for Bhutto's assassination?

I have been wondering about this for awhile now, the impact and enemies she would create, ever since the chaos that began when she first went back to Pakistan a few months ago. Who was her worst enemy? Her death certainly is timely, as an election is coming up soon for Pakistan and current leadership could use this to unite people behind them.

On the other hand, it was obvious from the start that she would anger islamic fundamentalists aligned with Al Qaeda in that country.

So I can see it either way.

Today is a sad day for the world! She represented the best hope for a moderate and open Pakistan.

It is sad, for sure, but I am not that convinced that she was the best hope. There were many issues surrounding her including credible charges of embezzlement and such that may have been made up by the opposition and maybe not. It is very hard to get the truth from that part of the world as to what is really going on. This certainly did not help the situation. I hope that a new civil war is not the result.

I think it's a sad day, too. She was too secular and democratic for that country. I said in a post a couple of months ago that she'd probably be a target...

Bush did it. Chaney pulled the trigger. I figured I post this before our brain dead liberal friends quote from Kos, MoveOn.org, truthout or some other liberal "media" site.

I'll be surprised if her funeral doesn't turn into a massive carnage of death.

jesus, you are so scarily correct on that one......I still think it's got musharraf written all over it, but I'm curious to see if AQ claims it, and if so, how long after the fact, as I am still not entirely convinced that musharraf doesn't secretly have a soft spot for them.

all I know is a very bad situation has gotten inestimably worse now.

Hi valis,

It seems that a lot of people are pointing their finger to him and it is precisely what the Islamists are expecting.
They are knowing well that the assassination will show him as the main suspect (less than 2 weeks before the elections) and that it may plunge the country in such a chaos he will soon or later loose his grip on the government.
It leaves him now few options :
- either strenghten his power (not a good idea, he may loose some important allies),
- or to proceed with the elections as his unfortunate rival was still alive (the best idea he may have IMO to fight against the Islamic radicals).
