A civilized peace between the West and Islam
Muslim nations can pursue knowledge.

The Holy Grail of peace between the West and Islam is the goal of an ambitious project launched today in Spain. The grandly-named Alliance of Civilisations aims to fight intolerance and fundamentalism. The objective is not only to promote cross-cultural understanding, but also to create and develop partnerships. Are you listening Mr President?

That would be great if both sides understood tolerance, since it is not in the vocabulary of Islam, there will be no peace in our lifetime if ever.

I agree with your assessment. Apparently, tolerance must be experienced first hand before it can clearly and unequivocally be understood by either side of the cultural chasm. The hopeful thing about volcabulary is that evolution changes meanings of old words and creates new ones.

The above statement needs some qualifiers.

Both sides indeed understand tolerance. It is in the vocabulary of moderate Muslims. It is not in the vocabulary of radical Muslims or radical fundamentalist Christian right-wingers.

Hello,

While toleration (of other faiths and their followers) is spoken of in Islam, the Quranic understanding of the term differs vastly from that of the "West". A simple search of secular sources on the subject will provide a good deal of analysis. I would point out the discussion of an article on tolerance in the Quran at http://www.theologyweb.com/campus/showthread.php?t=7024 as a good example from a site which discusses theology from several perspectives - secular, deist and faith among others.

Regards,
Lane
