The new shipment of iPod Touch is the SAME as the old shipment, same price and everything, EXCEPT that they get 5 new apps for free. Current iPod Touch owners have to pay $20 for those "extra" apps from the iTunes Store.

Shouldn't this update be free? What do you think of it?

Same ole marketing story -- drop in sales, add something extra to the package in hopes to spur additional interest.

Still works

Adding new features is one thing, but charging for a software upgrade is just wrong. What ever happened to companies supporting their products for a period of time after you buy them? My iPod Touch isn't even a month old yet.

Everyone that bought or was given an iPod Touch over the holiday season now have to pay $20 if they want this update.

Also, current iPhone customers can download a similar update for FREE.

Free for old and new iPhone customers
free for new iPod Touch customers
$20 for old iPod Touch customers

It's not right.

It would be no different than including a UMD movie with the PSP or any of the thousands of similar examples. When you purchased yours, you accepted that the functionality was worth the price. Others, like myself decided that there were either too few features or too great a price to purchase at this time.

The iphone comparison doesn't really apply since the update is additional functionality...not a purchasable package

I learned long ago that the price you pay to be one of the first to own something is not the only price

Apple, burgeoning with a new attitude based on MS's Vista boondoggle, is following in the famous footsteps of Sony during the Betamax years. Hang on tight to your patent and restrict your content to your users and force your customers to buy more of your stuff. It took Sony a long time to regain some of the respect that they had prior to that misadventure.

Every company does this, though. You pay through the nose for new technology if you have to have it when it first comes out. No way in hell would I have purchased a new apple phone when it first came out. I knew for a fact it would drop in price significantly within in a year. I think the people who bought it at top dollar should have a big "SUCKER" branded on their heads. Don't feel bad--you learned a valuable lesson and it only cost you $20. Trust me--there are lots of people out there that learned this lesson at a much higher cost. Just ask Stoner!

You're absolutely correct--but you won't see me saying Toyota screwed over their loyal customers--I knew I was paying a premium for new technology--I also knew I would have to wait at least two or three years to get it cheaper! I also don't regret for a minute buying any one of my three hybrid vehicles (this means of course one will break down in the next weel)!

Plus--the best benefit--I get to rub it in the noses of the hypocrite liberals that sqauk about the environment, but still buy polluting low mileage vehicles.

I actually love the look of my Prius--it grows on you. My Camry and Highlander are identical to the regular models--you wouldn't know they were Hybrids but for the fact it says it on the outside of the vehicle!

Can't believe that you didn't post the link to your favorite liberal "Yugo" song!
