What in the heck is Scientology
Hi there,

We've all been hearing about this Scientology thing. Doug E Fresh, Will Smith and now Tom Cruise has some kind of video out going bannanas over Scientology.
Here's the link.

Question! Wut the hella is Scientology? And why is it so popular among celebrites?

Their official site:
http://www.scientology.org/
The word Scientology literally means "the study of truth." It comes from the Latin word "scio" meaning "knowing in the fullest sense of the word" and the Greek word "logos" meaning "study of."

Scientology is the study and handling of the spirit in relationship to itself, others and all of life. The Scientology religion comprises a body of knowledge extending from certain fundamental truths.

Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scientology
Scientology is a body of beliefs and related practices initially developed by L. Ron Hubbard in 1952 as a successor of his earlier self-help system, Dianetics.[1] Hubbard later characterized Scientology as an "applied religious philosophy" and the basis for a new religion.[1] Scientology encompasses a spiritual rehabilitation philosophy and techniques, and covers topics such as morals, ethics, detoxification, education and management. The practice and promotion of the Scientology belief system is organized via the Church of Scientology, the first church of which was founded in 1953.[2]

Popular amongst Celebrities as they are rich. Scientology targets rich people to get their cash.

Shouldn't that read:
"Doug E Fresh, Tom Cruise and now Will Smith"

dude, Will Smith was the most recent, why do you have him in the middle?

Are we supposed to know the exact order in which every Scientologist has joined?

It is my understanding that one of the main tenants or the main one of Scientology is to 'reproduce' and have children according to their belief system.

If you had watched the news earlier this week, you would have known (so there is no excuse)

It was announced VERY recently that Will Smith joined Scientology

So yes, you should have known Will Smith was last

Please do correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't scientology the result of a bet L Ron Hubbard took with Isaac Asimov that he could start a religion and turn it into something big?

Funny! I had not heard that as an Asimov fan, but L. Ron Hubbard is the founder of Scientology if I am not mistaken. If so, Asimov would have to pay, too bad he died several years ago.

I didn't say watch one of those crappy celebrity "fake news" shows like AccessHollywood or anything.

This was on real news shows, between other actual news events. If you missed it then it means you don't give a crap about the news. Probably an uneducated redneck.

Imagine how much information you'd acquire if you just spend 1 hour each night watching the news.

Your world must be so clouded...... You don't watch the news at all? Wow I pity you.

i've heard lots of things about scientology....some of 'em VERY wierd....
i've had both casual acquaintenances and very good friends that either were or are involved in it.
and i've somehow gotten on their mailing list (not from the people i know....something i did on the web, no doubt)...and once on the mailing list, you are apparently considered a scientologist, and added to the telephone list, as well....once on that list, the calls ASSUME you already know what they're talking about...it's pretty strange, trying to convince these folks that you're really not one of them.

this is what i know
it is an immensely wealthy, well organized, and persistent group....they have a multitude of "focus" groups, all with some specific goal.
they are a closed shop....become one passed a certain "level", and bring children into it, and you are obliged to raise them as scientologists (and willing to do so, by that point)
this is what i feel about them
they have a unique brand of indoctrination, based on some sort of blend of science fiction and buddhist philosoply
they see themselves as having something both secret and inspiring, and that everyone NEEDS to be healthy and prosperous....that creates a bit of a conflict in social situations...where people are merely curious.....scientologists are not prone to "witnessing" the way christains are
for that reason, "novices" are not really scientologists, because their enthusiasm for the belief system is directed outward...they are willing to share.
it is difficult for them to maintain relationships outside the organization, imo, because they have been "processed" to relate to things they don't believe you understand
and this isn't even the wierd stuff

EDIT: one more thing, based on all the celebrity hubbub about it.....it would be very appealling to actors, because the overriding efforts of its training is to get the trainee to gain immunity from the distractions of everyday life....keep your sights on the goal....all else is distraction.....a very intense and serious form of role playing

.......as to Scientology, I hear it's a last resort/stop for dissatisfied and disillusioned Raelians or Christians.
