Farmgirl & Trekguy's Debate Thread
OK, I said I would do this--and now that my computer is back from the shop, I'm holding to my word.

NOTE: This thread is more or less just for us (Trekguy/Farmgirl22) to debate in--anyone welcome to join in as long as it stays more "debate-like". I will report posts that are "SPAM" or other similar nonsense!

Trekguy, I figured we would cover several topics every few days--putting say a 5 day time limit on each one? That way we can say what we want, but a stalemate doesn't have to last forever (and redundancy is reduced)...plus we'll get to discuss more topics that way. Anyway, I'll start with the first topic, and then we'll alternate on the choosing of topics--sound good?

READ POST #8....SORRY!!

(Info from post #8)****No, I didn't mean that--I just meant I didn't want the subjects to get changed before the debate was done....and I didn't want anything SPAM like or off-topic. Like none of that "you are an idiot" crap--I wanted an actual "debate"....sorry I didn't make that clear enough.... I'm not trying to be exclusive--but Trekguy requested that we debate and "show others how it was done"...so that's what the thread is about. It's supposed to be more debate-like and less name-callish.....you know, with points and rebuttals and such--with limits.****

TOPIC #1

Legal drinking age....is 21 an appropriate age?

I personally think that 21 is a ridiculous age to begin allowing drinking in America. I think that government has taken this too far, and is letting young people stay in a more irresponsible mindset.

By taking this decision away from parents (because parents will get into trouble for providing it even in their homes) the government is preventing parents from teaching responsible drinking at a younger age. I think that in turn increases not only the illegal aspect of underage drinking, but the "cheap thrill" of drinking illegally also seems to egg on other "cheap thrills" such as drunk driving. If parents were able to allow their teens to drink at home under parental supervision, I think that some of the recklessness that we see now in teens and young adults would be greatly reduced. I think we should return the legal drinking age to 18, and allow teens to consume alcohol under parental supervison (whether at home or in public) at age 15. I think that if parents were able to begin instilling this sort of responsibility in their teens at a younger age, they could reduce or even eliminate some of the reckless behavior that teens and young adults do illegally anyway.

Ya, I agree with Wacor on this one. This place has enough troubles without identifying which threads members can post to and which they can't.

Don't start getting exclusive. You will find even fewer people returning.

How can you start an exclusive thread, threatening to report anyone that dare post? This is absurd! Like rep and wacor said, it is you that are violating the tradition and good intentions of this forum. If you insist in having a personal one-on-one debate - with all others excluded - then I sugest you do so using PMs, or your own personal forum.

I agree with the wisdom of our friend up North and I would have thought it would be aganist the rules to have this action or this type of thread.

Whoa Farmgirl... let's not get exclusive here.

You probably should do a quick edit on that first post. The last thing you want to do in here, is tell people what to do.

OK, having the drinking age at 21 is ridiculous. If you're an adult at 18, then you should be able to have a beer!

There, that was easy.... NEXT!

Yes, I can now see it. A return to the old days would be refreshing. (See everybody, there is a conservative streak in me.)

Farmgirl....please do edit your first point. You now make sense to me and I no longer beliee you seek exclusive rights to the debate.

Good luck in that you silly hillbilly

and your initial debate topic is dumb too. been there done that with the 18 year olds drinking. we had that in MI in 1972 which was my senior year. It led to a lot of drinking around school and weekend parties were quite the rage.

I could live with 19 but never 18 again. too easy for kids in school to get an 18 year old in school to get the booze.

kind of sucks you can vote and go to war at 18 but I don't see this as a workable solution.

as to the parental supervision and drinking underage that is up to each family. keep it in house and it is none of my business. allow other kids to come over because there are adults there is a bad idea. those parties back in 72 almost always happened with the parents home. they were upstairs getting loaded most of the time.

Yes, how about the new study that relates bra cup size to the likelyhood of getting diabetes?

The biggest problem I see with 21 is that all the College students up here learn to drink at house parties, and then are out of control at 21!

I would go with 19. It seems to work ok for Windsor which is just across the border.

They sure don't allow stuff at the dorms like they used to. now they have the cops come in now and then to check rooms.
