I saw on cable ,one of the news channels ,that in California or Oregon they want to add a tax if you use paper or plastic bags . They want you to bring your own canvas bag that you have to purchase to put your groceries in to carry out .

I haven't heard about the tax thing here. We have no sales tax. But as an aside, where I live most of the stores give a five or ten cent, depending on which store, rebate if you bring your own bag. And you don't have to buy the bag from them. You can use a Safeway bag at Albertson's or vice versa.

You heard right! Don't know yet where this is going. Many of the stores here are selling canvas bags for $1, which is a good price. Some give you a nickle off on your groceries if you bring your own canvas bag. I have one, but forget it most of the time!

You rich people make me sick. I can't afford to buy more than a handfull of groceries at a time, so don't require any type of bag.

This would never work for me. I'd have to buy a ton of them to put my weekly $150. worth of groceries in. I've got a family of 5 to feed...are they nuts? Hope they dont put this idea into practice on the east coast!

Actually, they hold a lot! And the clerks pack them until they are too heavy if you don't watch them! Some people reuse their plastic bags when purchasing more groceries. That is a good idea.

You must avoid convenience foods and do a lot of cooking if you can feed a family of five on $150 per week.

It's no big deal. Actually, proposals like this are floated all the time. Mainly it is to get people talking about them.

I rarely take a bag when shopping. We have a number of canvas bags and always leave one in the car.

I keep a nylon bag in the saddle bags on my bike.

The resistance to any kind of conservation idea is staggering. We still have time to change our habits before they begin to really effect our life styles. I am afraid though that time is running out on us.

Around here, I am seeing more and more people with the canvas bags. They are colorful and advertise the store selling them. One store just has "The Neighborhood" on it.
