I have decided to keep my HP laptop. Temporarily, I purchased a program called Virtual Audio Cables for $40, which allows any sound that is produced by the soundcard to be recorded internally. You all have helped me to realize that I am picking on HP, as many other windows-based computer manufacturers are producing products with this disabled feature. I will take up this issue with the EFF and the RIAA, and perhaps every manufacturer who produces products with a partially disabled soundcard. Then, I would be caring about people, as I stated I do.

As adults (maturity uncertain), we need to be using these forums to help, not to criticize or bully. Thanks again for those who intelligently contributed. I don't think it's been a waste of time, just a good learning experience.

Well, it wasn't your intention for your thread to wind up in a debate forum.
But, that's were it got stuck.
Debate isn't about agreement

Good luck with the laptop.

Professors teach classes about "little did he know". Yes, civilized is a stretch.

CEO customer relations sent a reply apologizing for difficulties I am experiencing, and said that my message has been forwarded to their Customer Escalation team who will review my case. Then they provided a phone number to the HP Executive office in Palo Alto in case I wanted to add more. At least they replied, that was nice.

consumerist.com always recommends finding the numbers and email addresses of top execs when dealing with big corporations... and have a section dedicated to tips on getting those numbers and emails.

BTW, I'd warn off HP as well, based on a friend's recent experience: he bought a new top-of-HP's-line desktop machine, discovered he didn't like Vista on it, tried to install a legit copy of XP that he had... and the machine basically bricked itself when he tried booting from the XP CD. He had to take it back to the store, where for an extra $100, a tech used what I assume is a Linux boot disc to low-level wipe the drive before installing XP for him.

I'm told more and more manufacturers are doing this as well: "booby-trapping" their systems to prevent installation of XP or any other OS by the average user, and refusing to provide driver support for other OSes.

All the more reason to stick to custom-built PCs...
Just wanted to add that I tried creating a secondary partition, and a dual boot of both vista and xp. The SATA drivers are not recognized by the XP installation cd. I believe the only way to install is from an external floppy drive.

Depends on the XP disc. I made one with SATA support rolled in, but I've found that anything slipstreamed to SP2 has worked with all the SATA controllers I've run across so far.

sorry i couldn't be bothered reading all this thread i just thought this might be a good opportunity to bag HP, first computer i have bought in a long time was a compaq...still got it now... unfortunately, they charged more than enough and around 2 weeks after we bought it...they stopped making this particular model... no support or anything... it came with a free printer bonus you say? nope! it costs more to replace cartridges and keep it on 24-7 because it refuses to turn off than to buy a new printer every second or even every month

ah, a fellow firefox user! Listen, the ink can be really expensive in any retail store. I have a Brother which takes four cartridges. In the store, the pack sells for around $35.00. I just bought 12 cartridges (3 of each) for $25.00 shipping included from atlanticinkjet.com. They mail priority, so about 2 business days from the time you order. You all should seriously check 'em out.

the only thing about the newer HP printers is that even if there is black ink left if a colour cartridge is empty it refuses to print even black, now i don't use colour much so it tends to dry out, i have been trying to keep it going by printing a good colour pic every now and then but then it tends to run out too quickly... oh and the shipping would no doubt be a LOT more to Australia... got my old canon connected now anyway
