If I read the copyright law correctly the posting online only applies to books long after the authors death unless the poster has the authors aproval. The greed mentioned might more acuratly apply to publishers extracting fees on books long past the copyright date but objecting to society in general obtaining it free like they do.

No prob.
My part about "greed" is pointed at the folks whose main goal is to make an industry out of art. Take the "businessman" out of art and it goes a lot better. Take one of the best music shows I have ever seen, about twenty or so folks brought instruments and a love of music and jammed out in a park for about four hours. No money, no promoters, record executives, lawyers or folks selling t-shirts, just music in black and white. Every time that money or the need of someone to have power over someone for money comes into play bam!! No more black and white.
Like I said if Joe writes a book, binds the book, copyrights the book and sells the book then it is pretty straight forward but (and I admit I do not know a lot about the business of books) if Joe writes a book and wants it published you get gray, all of the sudden there are lots of folks looking out for their best interest and the interest of their check book and Joe has to hire someone to look out for his interest. (That is a lot of gray interest)
In relation to the topic of this thread, it seems that no matter what Goog. is doing what they are to make money, not to be an online public library. So, as most folks will, I feel that there is something a little "fishy" going on.
I like free but not at the cost of an artistes livelihood. If they do not have a say then it is wrong

Hi pelokwin and thanks for the clarification .
I agree with you up to a point , but unfortunately some ' artistes ' are out to make loads of dosh too. The system was orchestrated by dosh makers as it developed , and is WELL established ( entrenched ?) by now. They would probably not allow their money making machine to be recalibrated now.
Sorry for the delay in replying.

I would say that that is true, but there are some folks willing to buck the system (at least in music) and give there work away or sell it them selves at very low cost to the buyer and cut out the Co's. altogether. So there is hope
