After scandal, students are leaving Oral Roberts University

TULSA, Okla. - As Oral Roberts University prepares to hand out diplomas to its Class of 2008, Anna Siebring, a junior, will be mailing out applications to transfer to another school. Siebring, a government major, is among many students having second thoughts about staying at Oral Roberts after six months of scandal at the evangelical Christian university.

At 107, Livermore lightbulb is still a real live wire
Robert Durell / Los Angeles Times
By John M. Glionna, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
May 5, 2008

LIVERMORE, CALIF. -- Five years after his retirement, ex-firefighter Tom Bramell still likes to visit Station No. 6 for old times' sake, whistling in amazement at all the changes -- the strange faces and slick high-tech engines.

But one thing remains exactly the same, and it's what Bramell misses the most about his firefighting days. The sturdy little object hangs from the ceiling in the firehouse's engine bay, emitting its familiar faint orange glow.

Roberts has always been questionable in my mind.

There are reputable Christian universities to attend.

We're in a war - where are the media?

THE REAL NEWS of April played second fiddle to the presidential campaign, the pope's visit to America, and the Texas polygamy case.

The death toll for the US military in Iraq hit 49 in April, making it the deadliest month since September, according to the Associated Press. Around Iraq, at least 1,080 Iraqi civilians and security personnel were killed last month, an average of 36 a day, according to the AP tally. While that's down from March's total of 1,269, or an average of 41 per day, those casualties certainly don't add up to a stable Iraq.

But Iraq isn't getting the prominent play of other news topics. The latest statistics from the Project for Excellence in Journalism back up the conclusion that coverage of the Iraq war is on the decline.

Wind Energy In Rock Port, Missouri

ROCK PORT - It wasn't a ribbon cutting ceremony, it wasn't a ground breaking-- it was all about throwing a switch.

Welcome to Rock Port on Thursday, where the temperature was 44 degrees and the wind was blowing like crazy.

"What's interesting is my husband is in the oil business but that's alright, we're thrilled to have wind energy here. As Americans we need to get more independent," Rock Port resident Kim Bunton said.

"It's a big deal," Project Director Eric Chamberlain said. "It's a big deal for renewable energy and it's a big deal to be energy independent."

Chamberlain was born and raised in Rock Port.

"What we're celebrating is that the wind farm in Rock Port can produce more energy each year than what this community uses, and that has never been done before," Chamberlain said.

And that's why everyone showed up. From the celebration and speeches downtown to the city's power plant, the guy who made it all happen explained what it is all about.

"What we're showing here is the city is producing 2 megawatts more than they need, so in essence, this meter is running backwards," Chamberlain said.

Those who promise to be tough on terror ignore its root causes

Imagine that when Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman were murdered in 1994, police had a prime suspect in O.J. Simpson, but they completely ignored the fact that O.J. and Nicole were once married, dismissed previous domestic violence charges against the football star, overlooked the troubles that followed the pair's divorce, ignored conventional wisdom regarding crimes of passion, and came up with the assertion that Simpson murdered the pair because he was an anti-Semitic misogynist who hated the concept of freedom. Would anyone consider this good or even competent police work?

Welcome to U.S. foreign policy.

Since 9/11, our leaders have given every reason for Islamic terrorism except those which include the hard evidence. As the former head of the CIA unit tracking Osama Bin Laden, Michael Scheuer writes, "On no other foreign policy issue since the Cold War's end has the truth been so easy to establish on the basis of hard facts but so hard for Americans to see — primarily because their leaders eagerly distort or ignore the truth. At day's end, each (leader) is ready to intervene abroad to champion abstractions such as democracy rather than U.S. interests, each is ready to spend the lives of soldiers and Marines to do so, and each advances the Islamist cause by failing to see that Muslim hatred is motivated by U.S. interventionism more than any other factor."

As a 22-year veteran of the most hands-on terrorist-monitoring unit of the CIA, one might think Scheuer would know a thing or two about what motivates radical Islam.

Ah, the good old days.....

US, Russia trade diplomatic expulsions

WASHINGTON (AP) — The United States and Russia have expelled five diplomats and military attaches from each other's countries in moves reminiscent of the tit-for-tat exchanges of the Cold War-era, U.S. officials said Thursday.

The latest expulsions, ordered by Russia on April 28, were of two American military attaches at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow. They were preceded by the expulsion of a Russian diplomat from Washington on April 22, the expulsion of a U.S. diplomat from Moscow on April 14 and the expulsion of a New York-based Russian diplomat on Nov. 6, 2007.

The State Department said Thursday that Russia's most recent action was "not justified" but that it would comply with the order. It also sought to tamp down speculation that the series of expulsions could escalate. Spokesman Sean McCormack said the United States was treating them as separate incidents and that Washington considered the matter closed.
