An Ohio teenager says she should be in jail instead of her father.

Brian Gegner was sentenced to 180 days behind bars because his daughter was unable to complete her G-E-D.

As Deb Silverman reports, his daughter says he shouldn't be punished for her problems.

"Probation until I get my G-E-D would be reasonable, really reasonable, but to send him to jail that's just overboard"

JUDGE DAVID KNEEHOUSE ORDERED BRITANY GEGNER'S FATHER BRIAN TO 180 DAYS IN JAIL FOR CONTRIBUTING TO THE DELINQUENCY OF A MINOR FOR NOT FOLLOWING THIS COURT ORDER IT REQUIRED GEGNER TO BE SURE HIS DAUGHTER GETS HER GENERAL EQUIVALENCY DIPLOMA OR G-E-D. THIS COMES AFTER ONGOING PROBLEMS OF BRITTANY SKIPPING CLASSES A FAIRFIELD HIGH SCHOOL AND THEN BUTLER TECH. WHILE BRIAN GEGNER HAD CUSTODY OF HER, BRITTANY SAYS IT WAS WHILE SHE LIVED WITH HER MOTHER THAT SHE WAS TRUANT.

"I'm about to be 19 and my dad's getting punished for something I did when I was 16. It's like I should, if anybody, be punished for this. I would way rather me go to jail than my dad"

When does the self responsibility factor kick in? Can anyone get more information on the idiotic Judge who gave the Father the sentence. I bet money the judge is a liberal.

HAMILTON, Ohio - A judge says he will release a man who was jailed last week for failing to make sure his daughter earned her high school equivalency diploma.

Butler County Juvenile Court Judge David Niehaus's decision Friday would let Brian Gegner out of jail if his 18-year-old daughter Brittany attends a GED preparatory class and schedules the test before the next court date.

This is a perfect solution. Government steps in and assists a family to work things out. The teen gets an education and now is closer to dad.

I think the father deserves to stay in jail. He ofcourse is responsible for his daughters action while she lived with her mother. This judge is heroic and yet he fell to public pressure. We need to give our children to the govt to control the childs life the minute they are out of the womb until they are at least 30 years old. God bless the government and may they continue to have such good judgment in the future as they control our lives.

The important thing here is that somebody was punished. As long as we punish people they will be used as an example.

I do though agree with you. The mother should have been jailed as well.

Yes lock them both up and make the ADULT daughter a ward of the state.

We need to make examples of parents.

I think since the daughter is almost 19 and was ordered as a 16 year old by the judge to get the GED that the parents should get twice times the 3 years as jail time. 6 years should send a good message to those who dare defy a judge.

Was the daughter living with parents? Should she not then be minding her parents no matter what age?

You may believe that 18 is a good time for people to join adulthood, but, most conservatives I know do not.

No, we punish people for the sins of others all the time. If it is a good idea to punish children by taking food stamps from them when the parents do not work, then we should punish parents if they do not parent.

We conservatives have had the dominant role in policy making for a generation now. We also must take responsibility and not talk out of both sides of our mouths.

I agree completely. An 18 year old is not an adult. even at 21 years of age they have no business being in the armed forces. Kindergarten should last until our youth are at least 10 years old. Then we should have them take 15 years of school instead of the 12 currently in place. At that point the good students would have the option of being shipped to the nearest gulag or continue on with 10 more years of college education. At that point then they can be released to society.

My initial reaction was that it would have been a wise far right leaning judge who made such a reasoned decision. I do so wish he had not backed down as that does make him look like a liberal. We need not judge the political motives of judges. They work hard and try to do there very best for society
