Palin supporters set up legal defense fund

WASHINGTON — Gov. Sarah Palin's friends and supporters in Alaska set up a legal expense fund Friday to help her pay more than $500,000 in legal bills racked up defending ethics complaints — including one she filed against herself when she was a Republican vice presidential candidate.

Gov. Sarah Palin has signed a book deal with HarperCollins Publishers for what is described as her memoir.

"There have been so many things written and said through mainstream media that have not been accurate and it will be nice through an unfiltered forum to get to speak truthfully about who we are and what we stand for and what Alaska is all about," Palin said in an interview today in which she announced the deal.

The book is to be published sometime in the spring of 2010. Palin will collaborate on the book with a professional writer, who is expected to be chosen soon. The governor said she wants to do a lot of the writing herself, and that it will be her story and her words.

"It will be nice to put my journalism degree to work on this and get to tell my story, Alaska's story. There have been so many unauthorized books and publications that have spoken to somebody else's opinion of who I am what my family represents and what Alaska is all about," she said.

Alaska leads nation in suicides..Wonder if Palin will zero in on this?
By Kyle Hopkins | Anchorage Daily News

SELAWIK, Alaska — One of his daughters screamed. Then one of his sons.

Willie Ballot launched out of bed and into the bathroom. There he found his oldest girl, 17-year-old Dorcas, hanging from the shower curtain rod.

He lifted her over his shoulder. His nephew helped pulled the belt from her neck.

"Put her down. Started doing CPR," recalled Ballot, whose wife, Krystal, is the head health aide at the village clinic.

"But I could already tell her esophagus was not going to ...

"She wasn't coming back."

The death of Dorcas Mildred Ballot on Dec. 1 began a three-week string of suicides and suicide attempts that quietly punched holes in families and villages across Northwest Alaska. And served as a reminder: After decades of planning and spending, training and talking, suicide continues to take the lives of rural Alaskans at a distorted, alarming pace.

Last year, 162 Alaskans killed themselves, according to preliminary numbers from the Alaska Bureau of Vital Statistics.

That's the most ever recorded in one year in Alaska. The state suicide rate is roughly twice the national average and the rates are even higher – in some cases, much higher – in Alaska's rural areas. A week after Dorcas died, a 42-year-old mother in Selawik hanged herself. Alaska State Troopers were in town after that suicide when they learned that a 15-year-old boy had killed himself in nearby Noatak.

Young men in Kiana and Brevig Mission killed themselves too.

The region, which includes the hub of Kotzebue and a cluster of smaller villages straddling the Arctic Circle, has had the highest suicide rate in Alaska over the past decade, according to the state.

"It's definitely one of the highest in the country," said Wylie Tene, spokesman for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

Palin Clothing Complaint Dismissed By FEC
SHARON THEIMER | May 19, 2009 02:47 PM EST | AP

WASHINGTON — The Federal Election Commission has dismissed a complaint over the $150,000-plus designer wardrobe the Republican Party bought to outfit vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin.

Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, the good-government group that filed the complaint, argued that candidates aren't supposed to use donor money for personal expenses such as clothes. The FEC ruled Tuesday that the ban doesn't apply to party money, however.

The Republican National Committee told the commission that party money rather than candidate campaign money was used for the purchases.

The RNC also argued that the shopping spree was allowed under campaign finance rules that let the party spend on behalf of and in coordination with presidential campaigns...And it was not her idea.

Sarah Palin: Michael Steele 'bold and courageous'
There are some Reps that may not agree with this.
By ANDY BARR | 5/20/09 7:21 AM EDT

In a statement criticizing the president over General Motors' plan to sell its healthy assets to the federal government following bankruptcy, the Republican governor singled out Steele as a counterbalance to the president.

"Today, we have a friend in RNC Chairman Michael Steele, and his bold and courageous speech defines his leadership goals that will guide us all through this most difficult time for our nation."

Stimulus funds begin to trickle into Alaska
By Erika Bolstad | The Anchorage Daily News

WASHINGTON — Gov. Sarah Palin may have turned down $28.6 million in federal stimulus money for weatherization and renewable energy projects, but the state will still do very well when it comes to the Recovery Act.

An estimated $1.3 to $1.5 billion is coming Alaska's way — with some of it already on the street and in some cases, already spent.

"It's huge. There's no question in my mind that we were going to benefit significantly," said Sen. Mark Begich, D-Alaska.

"What you're starting to see now is exactly what the stimulus bill was intended to do," said Begich, who on Thursday criticized Palin for turning down the energy money.

His Republican counterpart, Sen. Lisa Murkowski, voted against the stimulus bill. But she, too, marveled last month at the amount of money that her staff determined would be coming to the state: an estimated $197 million in Department of Defense stimulus spending, largely for restoring and modernizing facilities on military bases within Alaska.

Letterman says Palin joke in 'poor taste' 18 or 14 he went too far. Not funny.
Said Palin is welcome to be a guest anytime.

(Updated at 12:00 p.m. ET with Palin response)

(CNN) – Late night comedian David Letterman, responding to criticism his recent joke about a member of Sarah Palin's family crossed the line, said on his show Wednesday night he is guilty of "poor taste."

But Letterman, who has been a critic of the Alaska governor, said the recent joke — that Palin's "daughter was knocked up by Alex Rodriguez" at a recent Yankees game — was in reference to 18-year-old Bristol Palin, not 14-year-old Willow who actually attended the baseball game with her mother last week.

In an issued statement, Palin spokeswoman Meghan Stapleton said: "The Palins have no intention of providing a ratings boost for David Letterman by appearing on his show. Plus, it would be wise to keep Willow away from David Letterman."..Good response!

Huffpost - NOW Joins Palin In Bashing Letterman
Letterman now in their "Media Hall Of Shame"

David Letterman's spat with Sarah Palin has had one interesting political effect: it put the conservative Alaska Governor on the same side as the pro-choice National Organization for Women.

However, I was listening to her today and she should do something about her voice. She had toned it down toward the end of the campaign, but apparently she has forgotten. Too high pitched, it distracts from the message and is irritating. Get a voice coach!! Hire Hillarys' coach. Remember how the Reps attacked Hillary about the shrillness of her voice? Hillary did something about it.
