#31 | There are many videos floating around the video sharing sites of Detroit's urban deterioration. The abandoned buildings and suburbs all gone empty or, worse still, remain occupied by the homeless in unsafe, unsanitary conditions...Some of desolate wastelands of Detroit are now great tourist attractions - Here in the midwest it is a pilgrammage of sorts, and many people here in Wisconsin know of or have gone themselves to see Detroit's now empty urban areas. Mile after mile of formerly densely populated wasteland. It is quite a sight to see so much human effort, engineering, construction, history and dreams all left to waste. Relics and hulls that you'd expect to find in the no-mans-land of Chernobyl except its surrounding one of America's greatest cities, a place that we used to hold up as an example of our industrial power.
It's a real shame. The level of poverty in some of those areas are more befitting the third world, or the shambles of industrial europe's big cities.

#32 | Well that is what happens when a city this big looses half of its population. For years there were problems with empty homes not getting torn down. They have gradually done a better job with that.
Not sure what you mean about the suburbs. I live 9 miles north of the border of Detroit and I am unaware of any of the burbs being anything like Detroit. | | Community Moderator with 50,226 posts. | | Join Date: Jan 2003 Location: Central USA Experience: Need no stinking badges |

But that might be due to the corruption with the old mayor and giving the projects to his buddies. | | Community Moderator with 32,942 posts. | | Join Date: Sep 2004 Location: Texas Experience: cp/m --> |

#41 | thank god I'm not a caveman then, as I have no idea how it could get to be that high ranking and rampant and not have something done about it.
but again, if there's politicians involved, you can bet something illegal is going on.
This is just more proof positive not to trust those twits.

#42 | It all starts with the families. Detroit has one of the worst drop out rates in the country. Way too many single mothers and way too many that don't care about their kids future. So then you end up with a massively corrupt school board. The things turning up are mind boggling. There is a slight glimmer of hope with some new blood likely coming on the city council and with Dave Bing as Mayor.
Still the school and city are so deep in debt I doubt they can avoid bankruptcy. That happens when the bureaucracy does not down size in sync with the population. | | Community Moderator with 32,942 posts. | | Join Date: Sep 2004 Location: Texas Experience: cp/m --> |

#43 | Yeah, I've actually heard about Bing, believe it or not. Sorta surprises me, actually.
But from what I've heard, it sounds like a good match; he'll be able to get some stuff actually done. | | Distinguished Member with 24,714 posts. | | Join Date: Feb 2005 Location: You will never know Experience: Depends on the definition |

He overcame a devastating eye injury the they thought would cut his career short. I was really bummed as were many when he was traded away. After he retired he formed Bing steel which was and is a successful business in the area. We did work at his house in the burbs. Very nice but not a mega mansion. The only fault with the guy is he is pretty soft spoken and the city could use somebody who is more charismatic and vocal. Something Kwame was. That due had it all and could have done wonderful things if he were not so corrupt. | | Community Moderator with 50,226 posts. | | Join Date: Jan 2003 Location: Central USA Experience: Need no stinking badges |
