Three fixations of fundamentalist Christians
Three fixations of fundamentalist Christians.

I seem to remember Robin Williams in one of his shows remarking at the apparent contradiction of fundamentalist christians opposing abortion on the grounds that life is paramount, yet supporting capital punishment, and the relaxing of gun control legislation.

I am sure that the above is an over simplification, but your thread reminded me of it nevertheless.

Actually, I believe there are only two:

Quote:
1 Love your God with all your Heart, Mind, Soul, and Strength.
2. Love your neighbor as yourself.

For this sums up the law and the prophets.

Looks like there's a lot of Christians only batting 500.

Yes, of course the absolute truth exists. Evolution, mathematics and psychics are clear examples.

500? There are times I'm batting zero.

Those commands are those things which look and sound deceptively simple, but take an awful lot of work to do.

I know what you're saying, but I would even submit they go together more than they are separate. If you ain't doing one, you're probably not doing the other.

Is "fundamentalist" just another word for "extremist"?

Christians aren't typically interested in "labeling" each other. We typically refer to each other as "Brothers" and "sisters". View the christian connection social group. You are not going to see many "worried" about labels.

Labels are awfully awfully tricky business, as what encompasses a "fundamentalist" to one may not be to another.

I figured you would like that.

Hope you got a good weekend planned. Boy is having his 10th birthday (just yesterday, he was a little thing crawling around on the floor) so that will be fun.

Oh but if it were only so.
And those two are hardly fixations. More like moral imperatives (and good ones).
But the "three" fixations ARE there among some and they do more damage than good.

That is one of the stupidest things Robin Williams has ever said. There is no comparison of abortion and capital punishment. One is innocent, one has demonstrated beyond a reasonable doubt that they can't function in society and have caused such great harm they need to be "put down".
