Interesting - racist or no?
Not sure where to put this... so if a mod feels it should go to (un)Civ debate then by all means move it there.

Interracial couple denied marriage license in La.

From the first 2 paragraphs:

"I'm not a racist. I just don't believe in mixing the races that way," Bardwell told the Associated Press on Thursday. "I have piles and piles of black friends. They come to my home, I marry them, they use my bathroom. I treat them just like everyone else."
First off... what is using the bathroom have to do with anything?

secondly, what gives him the right do deny a marriage because of 'what kind of children they will have'? Suppose they are not going to have children? Still going to deny them? It doesn't matter what experiences he has, he has a job to do regardless.

The title of this thread seems to question whether the situation is racist. Of course it is, even a person raised in the deep south under the old Jim Crow rules would consider it racist although that person might also consider it reasonable thinking.
Its not possible to avoid illogical reasoning by everyone but it is possible to expose that reasoning to ridicule, and its not fair (or legal) to prevent any person applying for any legal document based on the moral judgment of any elected official.
Could a minister refuse to participate because of his beliefes? Perhaps, but can a justice of the pease refuse the license? not without being sued!

Until one is OK with the fact that maybe your daughter is marrying out of race we are all pretty much racist to a point.

I would not be OK with it at all. I must be a racist.

Granted: Different circumstances, the man is an elected official and his J.O.B. insists he be color blind. He should have done his J.O.B.

when i was in college (late 60s) i lived with a bunch of other jocks.....one of 'em was black....when my folks learned of this they said (and i quote) "you don't eat off the same plates as he does, do you?"
i thought they were joking and laughed "yeah...but i wash 'em first"
that wasn't their concern.....'nuf said.

i agree....it's not his job to impose his concerns on the law.

do i think it's racist? judging from what you posted....no.

Perhaps he was trying to avoid a remake of the tragic incident in which the authorities will not act upon

well said, Skivvy.....and important.

my parents certainly harbored a bias that would be considered racist....but i never saw them ACT on it in the way they treated other people.....i'd guess their motto was 'separate but equal'

my guess is that you're right.....to some degree, we all have feelings surrounding race that get in the way of our ability to relate to other people

i remember i was in puerto rico sleeping out under the stars one night with a black girl from the south who had moved to chicago for some promise of modelling....my one "interracial relationship", if you can call knowing someone for 2 months a relationship.....but we were both young, and it was one of those things: everyone knows the story.

it was the first time i'd ever touched a black female with anything more than a handshake....and my brain was schitzo all the while...one part just a human male with a human female....one part processing all the data from the standpoint of white guy with a black chick -and that part of my brain was incapable of seeing us as individuals......it was most definitely a racial pov.

she and i talked about it some during the night....i told her the story of my folks and the dishes.....she said her dad would "whip her butt" if she knew what we were up to.

ain't travelling wunnerful?

That's a dead give away right there.

When I hear people say things like that it reminds me of when the Tel Co was introducing Affirmative Action some years ago (I was Mgmt.). We were covered on it and the proper way to handle it. The Tel Co was veeeery gung ho on it. Some of the not so smart employees were saying the usual stupid biased things. Well, the first black girl arrived and a week later she was the queen of the office. She had white friends galore. I shoudn't make fun because I was from Chicago and had known all races/ethnicities through school and work. I just kinda watched the show evolve.

Really?..many people are denied marriage for many reasons..this just happened to be his......what gets me is everyone makes a big fuss of it....but mo one cares about the video of real racism..I have used it in a couple other threads.

You know what else I have noticed? you always seem to come along behind me after a post...all peed off and represent yourself as the Oprah of libertarians...so predictable..........You really should relax and light up one of those cubans

Didn't say that of course, we do. Racism occurs around the world unfortunately. We are talking about this situation & certainly a marriage would not be refused like this in the UK Would it be in the Netherlands?

As far as the UK goes, of course we have racists. we even have the BNP, and that says everything. However, racism is a way of thinking, and you cant change peoples minds, no matter how stupid you may think they are.

as for the JP, hell yes, thats racism. He is denying marriage on the grounds of race. Saying "oh, I dont reckon this marriage will last long" is a pile of rubbish. So, he can tell if a marriage will last? From that he should turn down 70% of applications, given current divorce rates.

The old standby of "oh, I have many non white friends" is the biggest cop out ever. As soon as that one comes up I start to smell the cow dung in the air. He judged a relationship on his personal scale, not a legal one, and comes out looing shameful.

Oh, and I think I can say I am not a racist. My parents are fine with me marrying my chinese gf, and were fine with my indian one of 13 years. They dont look at the race, but at the person. Maybe if that dumbass JP did the same he could get beyond what seem to be his personal prejudices.

Gulo, he was more concerned on what children they would have... and he doesn't want them to suffer due to black/white communities; from link:

"There is a problem with both groups accepting a child from such a marriage"
