MW2: Death of gaming?
If you know about this, you probably have strong views already. If not, here we go.

Infinity Ward/ activision, in recent reports, have said that the new Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will not support dedicated servers. What this means is that as far as the PC online community goes, the game i sdead in the water. They have upped the price significantly, put back the release date, and then 4 weeks before it comes out, told us that they have killed the game.

Dedicated servers are important as they allow you to join a specific server, play with the rules and maps you want, and the people you want to. CoD WaW supported it, as did all previous. Most games do. The upshot is that an awful lot of people have cancelled their pre order for the game in disgust. Clans (and I include mine, Punk Posse) have been outraged at the way we have been treated as a community.

So, the point. If this continues in this vein, games will be for consoles because the sales in PC are going down. Without the features we need, we wont buy it. The price will stay up, and future games may follow the trend. Why should we put up with this? Activison/ IW make enough money from us as it is, without doing all they can to ruin what was a much anticipated event. The PC version is dead in the water because of the greed and stupidity of them.

Does this signal the end of PC games as we know them? If so, I for one won't line their pockets with console games. Mouse and kboard beat stupid controllers any day, if only because you can move at a reasonable rate and aim properly. More than that, I have many online friends, some of whom live close enough that you can meet and talk with people that share similar interests. Yet again, a developer has forsaken us in the interests of just being bothered to do a proper job.

Coincidentally, I was looking at the Amazon UK comments on this game earlier. Seems that most people agree with you. I'm not an online gamer - I'm so sad I even play Left4Dead in single player mode! - but I do sympathise. Not a good trend, particularly when put alongside the fact that a lot of "Games for Windows" [sic] are now just poor ports of console games.

If it is indeed a developer/marketing trend, I'd imagine the manufacturers of high spec gaming PCs will be less than happy.

While deployed my laptop wouldnt support the game I wanted it to play, Modern Warfare. So I purchased a laptop from Alienware specifically to play games. I now have a PS3 and play COD:WAW whenever I get the chance.

Its a bummer that MW2 will not be supported for online play but you can still purchase the game and play a multiplayer game by direct connect, thats what we do when deployed. Yeah, its not like the online community but at least you still get to play one of the most anticipated games in a long time.

Just a thought.

The main problem is the loss of dedicated servers. They waited until 3 weeks before the planed release date to start hinting that they were not available. As a result, out clan have, to a man, cancelled their preorders. There are only 50 or 60 of us, but thats lost sales, and many other clans have gone the same way. Their is no ability to set up servers, thus no rule changes, no mods, no maps. It has killed the game for those that will play it most. I dont want to connect to a random server, I want to play with the community I have grown with.
This is a poke in the eye to the PC community. Activisions response is that oh, new players might get a server they dont like, effectively. Fine, look till you find one you do, same as everyone else does. Most of the sales to PC users will be the core gamers that have followed it through, and want more of the same. Whatever happened to if it aint broke, dont fix it? It is laziness and a desire to screw more money through the inevitable "you need such and such account to keep your stats"

As far as anticipated games, yes, it was. But at the moment, Activision are aware of over $3 million dollars worth of lost sales due to this in cancelled preorders. I for one will not buy a game that has been castrated in this way.
