Mitt Romney is an impressive man, but until now, we didn’t know just how impressive. According to his senior adviser, Ed Gillespie, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee is a time traveler.

Retroactive retirement! It was a brilliant formulation, perhaps the greatest addition to the political lexicon since “no controlling legal authority.” And it raised tantalizing possibilities: If Romney can do it, perhaps others can go back in time to rearrange events.

George W. Bush could retroactively end his presidency on Sept. 1, 2008, before the financial collapse. Donald Rumsfeld could retroactively pull out of Iraq before the insurgency. President Obama could retroactively deny government funding for Solyndra.

Sometime before the Republican National Convention in Tampa next month, Mitt Romney will pick a running mate.

Read about the candidates.

Prevailing cable punditry says Romney is going to pick someone "safe," meaning dull, white and male. The candidate will have more experience holding public office than Palin did, and he'll likely hail from an important swing state where moose don't outnumber independent voters.

Forget feisty. Forget animated. Forget spontaneous.

All you want is somebody who looks harmlessly vice-presidential, stays on message and says nothing terrifying between now and November.

WASHINGTON -- In the span of one morning, top Mitt Romney surrogate John Sununu referred to President Obama as dumb and stupid, called the Chicago political culture from which he came "corrupt," brought up Obama's admitted use of marijuana as a kid in Hawaii, resurfaced the name of Tony Rezko -- the jailed financier with ties to Obama -- and then questioned the president's Americanness.

It was a tour-de-force performance for the former New Hampshire governor, whose demonstrated willingness to throw punches has made him the wartime consigliere for the Romney campaign. But moments after Sununu said on a conference call Tuesday morning that he wished Obama "would learn how to be an American," he tried to clarify and downplay the remark.

Liar, you meant it. Just another dog whistle. Keep on talking, helpful to Obama.

Mitt Romney addressed mounting pressure for him to release additional years of tax returns on Tuesday, telling National Review Online that he was not eager to give the Obama campaign more fodder for attacks.

"In the political environment that exists today, the opposition research of the Obama campaign is looking for anything they can use to distract from the failure of the president to reignite our economy," Romney said. "I’m simply not enthusiastic about giving them hundreds or thousands of more pages to pick through, distort, and lie about."

Excuse me. Talk about digging a hole for yourself. He is either ignorant about how his words affect folks or so arrogant he doesn't care.

A nationwide survey by Public Policy Polling carries a message to Republican nominee-in-waiting Mitt Romney: Follow the example of your father and release your tax returns.

By a margin of 56-34 percent, the survey showed that Americans want Romney to release his tax returns for the past decade. The pro-release sentiment in the poll was strongest among those earning more than $100,000 a year.
