Tried to post it but it is too long and the links to change pages wouldn't work. However, you can subscribe for 30 days free and get to the article. Sorry.

GALLUP POLL NEWS SERVICE >> GOVERNMENT AND POLITICS

Bush Ratings Reach Low Points of Presidency

Despite President George W. Bush's major address to the country last week, his popularity has sunk to the lowest level of his presidency. His overall job approval rating ties for the lowest it has ever been, while his ratings in other areas are the worst Gallup has measured. Americans are guardedly optimistic about the government's ability to help Hurricane Katrina victims, but a majority wants to cut back spending in the Iraq war to help pay for the hurricane damage. Overwhelmingly, Americans want an independent pan el, not Congress, to investigate the reasons for the government's slow response.

You have to laugh---the right wingers like to claim that the economy is doing well, but in this same poll the American people OVERWHELMINGLY disagree:
63-35 say that the Bush economy isn't exactly exciting them. This might have something to do with the quality of jobs, not the quantity of jobs that the BushBots like to kite.

Support for U.S. Policy in Iraq Is Dwindling

Record numbers of Americans are registering their disapproval of the Bush administration's "stay the course" policy on Iraq. A clear majority of Americans now say sending U.S. troops to Iraq was a mistake, and two-thirds disapprove of the job President Bush is doing on Iraq. Nearly as many are ready to start withdrawing troops. The reason behind the latest shift on Iraq is unclear, but escalating rebel attacks and concerns about the costs Hurricane Katrina has created are both plausible explanations.

Public Most Satisfied With Government's Handling of Parks, Open Space

Of all the major functions the federal government performs, the American public is most satisfied with the work the government is doing in the area of national parks and open space. The public is least satisfied with the government's handling of the nation's finances, poverty, and healthcare. Since 2001, Americans' satisfaction with the government's handling of the military, foreign affairs, energy, and the nation's finances have declined significantly. Republicans are more likely to express satisfaction than Democrats in all areas.

Most Americans Tentative About Origin-of-Life Explanations

A recent Gallup survey shows that most Americans have somewhat tentative views about evolution, creationism, and intelligent design. Each concept professes to explain the origin and development of life on Earth, but few Americans are familiar with all three. Clear majorities believe that creationism and evolution are at least probably true, but the public is divided on the validity of intelligent design.

Hurricanes, Energy Prices, Investor Optimism Suggest Bleak Holiday Sales

Investor optimism fell sharply in September from its already low levels, as Hurricane Katrina's aftermath of surging gas prices caused widespread financial hardship, according to the UBS/Gallup Index of Investor Optimism. Even more importantly, more than half of all investors say higher gas prices have caused them to cut back on other spending. Thankfully, Hurricane Rita's impact appears to have been less severe than expected and may not add significantly to the problem. Still, with the expe cted surge in home heating oil and natural gas prices this winter, the sales outlook for the holidays can be described only as bleak.

Trust in News Media Rebounds Somewhat This Year

Half of Americans say they trust the mass media to report the news fully, accurately, and fairly. Confidence in the media has increased significantly since last year, but the level of confidence remains slightly lower than what Gallup has found in recent years. A plurality of Americans describe the news media as too liberal, while one in six say they are too conservative. Republicans are much less likely than Democrats to express confidence in the media, and are much more likely to perceive media bias, with most saying they are too liberal.
