Hurricanes, Energy Prices, Investor Optimism Suggest Bleak Holiday Sales
Investor optimism fell sharply in September from its already low levels, as Hurricane Katrina's aftermath of surging gas prices caused widespread financial hardship, according to the UBS/Gallup Index of Investor Optimism. Even more importantly, more than half of all investors say higher gas prices have caused them to cut back on other spending. Thankfully, Hurricane Rita's impact appears to have been less severe than expected and may not add significantly to the problem. Still, with the expe cted surge in home heating oil and natural gas prices this winter, the sales outlook for the holidays can be described only as bleak.
