I see someone had this problem before, but I've read through the thread on this site and I can't make head nor tail of it:

I'm having the same experience the other guy had. I try to save an edited picture, and it says: "The selected file format for saving doesn't support object saving. Everything will be merged onto the base image." So I save ... and it just re-saves the unedited image. (All I'm trying to do is crop the picture.)

Last time helpful people wrote helpful things and the enquirer seemed happy and wrote: "Thanks for the tip, that rang a bell and made me look up the help and I found out I had to use an object... It's my first work with pics (adding stuff to them), so I thought a simple save in the .jpg format was enough. I finally got the idea and merged the jpg with the object (.tpx in my case)."

I'm afraid that I don't understand a word of this! (When when I joined this site just now, I put myself down as having "intermediate" computer skills , but I may be flattering myself... )

Can some kind person write down in very, VERY simple terms what I need to do to save a picture I've edited on Ulead Photo Express 3...?

Wow, that was a old thread.

Your get "The selected file format for saving doesn't support object saving. Everything will be merged onto the base image." this when you save in formats that will not save object or layers etc.

Do not have "Ulead Photo Express 3.0" on my PC or have I used it in years so can't remember the default saving format but PhotoImpact it is .ufo. I get that same message if I go to save in other formats that will not save the info. It's just telling you all the layers etc you have will not be saved in the formant your saving to.

Now that is no big deal and you can still save in .gif, jpg etc that will gave you that message and all will be OK.
But if you ever wanted to go back and re-edit then you can not do it or can't do it as easy because everything was merged together.

So you have a couple option.
1. click pass that message and save in .jpg
2. save in a better format like .psd ot .obj that saves all the info on the layers etc.
3. save in both 1. and 2. because you can then get the smaller file size of the .jpg but if you saved it also in the other better formant you can also go back later and redo things.

Also Ulead default formant like .ufo can only be open by Ulead programs. So if you had other Ulead programs and saved in .ufo and had the layers etc it will open up in the other programs with all the layers.

You say .tpx is the default image formant for Ulead Photo Express 3.0. because it has been so long I can't remember.

I have used many versions of Ulead PhotoImpact and Ulead GIF Animator. I can save in .ufo all the layers and then open in Ulead GIF Animator.
Now Ulead GIF Animator also has it's own format that saves the info and that is .UGA but not in PhotoImpact. My guess is .tpx is only Ulead Photo Express.

Now to save info of layers etc that other programs can use .psd "Adobe Photoshop" is best to use because so many other image programs will be able to open it.

However ... browsing around this very board I realised that I am in effect Fred Flintstone for trying to use an ancient (although no doubt serviceable) program such as Ulead Photo Express 3. I found the thread with suggestions of some free photo-editing programs, and FastStone was particularly well recommended.

And wow! It's stunning! A quantum leap with a capital Q! Easy to use and with a host of brilliant features.

So - no more Fred Flintstone. I'm now Fred FastStone...

Yes Photo Express 3 is old and limited in what it can do. Newer version I guess did more but now all Ulead is dead after Coral took them over and that is sad because I always like PhotoImpact.

But a older program does not always mean it has no use. I am using PhotoImpact 8 that is older. Got PhotoImpact Pro 10 from Nova (still ulead but tru nova) but it is buggy so went back to PhotoImpact 8. I losted one new thing it does but really no lost.

Then I like using more then one program because each have the thing they do best.
Like Photo-Brush I have a older version of 2x and 3x
The Digital Camera Enhancer and some other free tools are all part of Photo-Brush. But Digital Camera Enhancer is what I like best.

You can get the free version. It's the very same but as a plug-in to Photo-Brush it is more easy because you get the Photo-Brush undo and can go back and redo changes without have to save. I even have the paid version of Digital Camera Enhancer but use the one build in the most.

If you take the time to play around with FastStone and other image programs your find you can do a lot more then you think with the effects from the filters, plugins and lots of plugins can be added and free ones.
What effects you do you may not like but do not rule them out without try it again with other images because the colors etc in one picture may not look good with one effect but will with another picture.

So if you have room for other programs then try them out also and remember .psd is good to use in I think all of them.

I just got back after 3 years some paid plugins I got to learn just what I can do again.
