i just bought a digital camera and installed photoshop 7

need help on some simple tools

1 thing i truly want to learn is:
magic wand: how do i select a particular object in 1 picture (like person, car or bike) and paste it to another background like in a custom wallpaper (site like www.themexp.org
can someone provide me a good tutorial site, i can't seem to get this right. when i try the magic wand tool, it ended up selecting just part of the object.

magic wand doesn't always work the best for this. I use the quick mask feature or the magnetic lasso tool.
