downloading pictures
I have AOL 8.0 and now Windows XP. My computer recently crashed and a friend installed the XP and was able to bring back most of my lost materials. I know little of computers. Before, with Windows 98, I had no trouble clicking on a picture and saving it to "My Documents" file. Now when I try the picture is not saved. It says "no preview available." I tried right-clicking on a picture (I like that, never heard of it before), but that did not work either. I do not know what "Temp Int folder files" are so I guess they remain if they exist.
What do you suggest I do?

Now when I try the picture is not saved. It says "no preview available."

I dont' know computers but I know AOL and no preview available has nothing to do with the compress graphics settings on AOL I think. The compress graphics settings is only changed if you right click to save a web graphic and you only get bitmap as the choice, changing that setting will then let JPEG appear. I have never heard of changing that setting if it says no preview available when trying to save a downloaded picture but I could be wrong. Since it's an upgreade from 98 to XP wouldn't this be an XP problem and nothing to do with AOL? If I am totally wrong here you can yell at me and kick me out, I just like to help if I think I know something since I have used AOL 5yrs. I know it pretty well by now.

sorry, there'll be no yelling and kicking people out, that's only done on the 3rd fridays of the month

1. is it a pic in aol or once you've launched the browser (either in aol or with aol minimized)?

2. what choices do you get with right click?
(save, save as, etc)

3. that second link may be worth a try, even though the graphics compression doesn't appear to be at the root of your problem, you can always undo the setting change
(i'm a 10 year aol veteran - at times anything is worth a try when aol and windows are squabbling about something )

temp internet folders are default folders that XP throws files into - at times with no rhyme nor reason

C:\WINDOWS\Temp\Temporary Internet Files is the usual location

post back re: Q1 and 2 though, interested in the sequence that you go through

Oh so sorry I am being stupid today. I thought they meant they downlaoded pictures and then got that message when the opened them.

I really wonder what AOL was like 10yrs. ago? We had an IBM 256 or something 15yrs. ago. That was our first computer but for $3,000 at the time there was no modem or internet. Actually it must be longer than 15yrs. when we got that first computer with those big Old round disks. Hubby being a teacher that does not do well with change is still using that thing with pro write and lotus 1,2,3 but me I like to forge ahead with technology so it's a newer computer with XP for me. Every time he has a problem and asks me for help I forget how to work with that darn machine. Sad thing is at school he now has a brand new IMac sitting on his desk and he has no clue what he is suppposed to do with it. Take attendance and check his school e-mail I guess if he even knows how to get to the e-mail.

sorry, thought you were having the same problem as the first poster - didn't realize you were adding your comments to the first one

i started with compuserve and a 9600 modem
moved to aol with the 14400, then 28800, then 33600 etc
used it more for a backup as i had a local dialup but some of the features were/are nice and most of my luddite relatives used aol, so the buddy list etc came in handy

continued to use version 4 till aol refused my connection till i upgraded (last year)

currently using version 7

tried to cancel many times but they keep adding more free time to keep me
- and they no longer offer the el cheapo plan i have but i'm grandfathered along at 6.95 per mth for 180 minutes
- the 9.95 for 10 hrs is a better deal but i don't use them anyways

still useful as a dial up backup for the cable connection though

You know I hear that happens if you try and cancel. I access through cable but I pay $15 a month for the bring your own provider plan. I do get 5hrs. of dialup a month in case the cable goes out but haven't had a problem yet.

Well, I could dump AOL and just use my cable provider but I am involved in many communities I love on AOL including a wonderful photography group and our graphics arts community is the best so I wouldn't be able to access that stuff anymore. The cable provider has no communities or forums of any kind like AOL does. Also the free webspace on AOL comes with easy designer and I know how to use it well to make the pages for a craft club I am in charge of. The cable company gives us free webspace but has no tools so you have to have your own program to make a page. Basically I think we pay the high cable price to get the fast access and no other perks to go with. Not sure how other cable providers work but that's how it is here. I like my setup because I have the best of both worlds, I get to keep all the wonderful stuff I love about AOL but have a fast connection to it with no dial up.
