image and picture settings
Could someone help me get my pictures etc, to open by the default setting which was on my computer when I bought it, before I had a scanner and printer and, picture programs? Please? I have all the other problems fixed except this one.

Sure can, but you will have to do the same procedure for each type of image seperately. .jpg,.gif,.bmp,...........

All you have to do is navigate to the image in "explorer" then Right-click> go to "open with" and a new box will open> Do NOT pick from that list, go to "Choose Program" at the bottom> Choose the program you wish from this list, making sure to check the box at the bottom that says "Always use this" Click OK and you are done.

No if the image you started with was a "jpg" all jpgs will open this way. Then you have to do it all over again with .gif to make them do the same thing.
Not so hard .....just several steps.

You canalways change it back the same way.

The "beauty" of windows is that there are a thousand ways to do everything?!?!

The simplest way to open "explorer", if you have a keyboard with the "windows" key, (between Ctrl and Alt) is to press the Windows key and the letter "E".
That will open "explorer" or you can Double click on "My Computer"...........or any of a dozen other ways

Anyway, once you get to "Explorer" you need to click on whatever will get you to your image files. I can't tell you were they are........everyone does it different. The "default" on a system with only a C drive would be ....

C>My Documents>My Pictures.....select a single image and follow the instructions from my previous post.

There are litterally dozens of image formats.
The most common on the web are .jpg,.gif and .bmp
There are others like .png and .tiff but they get much more specialized from there. You are not likely to come across more than these unless someone you know is E-mailing them to you or something. I'm sure if you "google" something like (image file extensions) there will be more information than I could ever give you.

With Win98SE you have to first highlight the image then hold the Shift key while you right click to get “Open with”. Otherwise the instructions are the same.

The Windows key + E opens My Computer on my machine. That will work but Windows Explorer is a better program to become accustomed to for file management. It is under Start>Programs or you can right click the Start button and select “Explore”.

Whatever program your computer opened them in before. Probably Windows Explorer which is usually “iexplore” in the list.

A much better way to view your pictures is to download Irfanview – www.irfanview.com When you get to the part on the install where it asks for associations select “Images only”.

After Irfanview is installed you can go View>Display Options and select “Fit image to window”. It is a terrific viewer and you don’t have to set anything else.
