Unhappy Pinnacle Studio 8 burning problems
I recently installed a DVD burner in my computer. I have captured, edited and burned video and played it on my shelf top DVD player, it worked fine using the Sonic DVD software that came with my burner. Now that I have added Studio 8 and banked too many hours editing a home movie on it, the DVD's I burn using studio 8 won't play on my shelf top unit. Why won't the Studio 8 versions play on my players but the others will? Any help greatly appreciated.

I afraid there's a well doctumented fault with S8 and dvd burning. They offer no support and admit nothing. Most dv'ers use other buring tools.

Rache
I also use Studio version 8 and have burned many DVD's using the embedded software without incident so I am not sure what may be happening to Fireman.

Fireman
Have you updated your studio program too:
8.10.4 Patch

Note: Before you update if you have not done so already I would back-up your STU files minimum or all special video holding folders just in case.

Let me know if that helps.

Also what format is the burner...... DVD-R or DVD+R?
If both formats then what format DVD did you burn and not have it work?

I have been burning using Memorex +R media.

Note: Rache suggestion of using another software package for burning is a good option if above fails. I believe you could have Studio 8 Render and compile the DVD image and use other software from there.

I have not updated, I just installed the software, so I did not know I would need an update.

My burner is a +R

I have rendered the images from studio and burned them with Sonic however Sonic does not have the capabilites for as neat of menues as Studio and somehow the menus don't work on Sonic from studio.

If you haven't picked up on it, I'm not very computer savy. Off hand how much do you estimate that update would cost. I'm tired of spending money on things that don't seem to work?
Thanks for the suggestions.

The update I linked you to is free. Many software and hardware vendors use updates also called patches such as these to correct problems after release of their products. You might be confusing updates with upgrades. Upgrades are adding new features to an existing software package and usually carry a price tag.

If you look at the weblink I sent you right below the Studio 8.10.4 Patch title there is description. The description explains the problems being fixed.

Good luck and let me know how you are progressing.

Well, it finally works, kind of! I trashed all of my captured video, uninstalled and reinstalled Studio 8 along with the patch that Dave suggested. I now have successfully burned my first project. I had to render it to a file and burn it in NERO, still can't get Studio to burn correctly. It works for me though.
I think the main problems were that my hard drive was over 90% full, Studio 8 requires more open space. I just installed 250 more GB of hard drive for future projects. Thanks for your help Dave! Out.

Sorry to hear all your previously captured mpg's\avi's were trashed. I put my captured mpg's\avi's into a folder called "My Videos", then all the .stu\.scn files into another folder called "My Video Projects". All of the special folders are stored in "My Documents" folder. This way if one must reinstall or do an update patch such as 8.10.4 then all is not lost. There is another patch coming out soon that is 8.12.XX which addresses Sync problems and others.

Hope dedicating another large space on a hard drive helps the burning process. Let me know.

Dave

Same EXACT Problem
I have the same EXACT problem with studio 8 version 8.12. When I burn a DVD, it will not play. I used the Sonic program that came with my DVD recorder and it worked perfectly, but Studio, a more EXPENSIVE program, will not work. I still have not resolved the problem. All my video and the program are on a new 250 gb hard drive dedicated to that. If anyone has any more advice, please reply. I would really appreciate it. Thanks.

Here is a summary from the bottom of the this thread on the whole process of burning home movies to DVD:

Quote:
1. Download Windows Movie Maker (I like Screenblast better, but there is not a trial version to transfer your video from camcorder to your computer (remember you need a firewire card or video card that will capture) and render your movie to AVI file on the hard drive.

2. Download the trial version of TEMPenc3.0 Express Encoder and encode your AVI file to MPEG-1 (for VCD) or MPEG-2 for DVD. Most of you will use the NTSC format rather than PAL (Some countries will use PAL).

3. Download the trial version of ULead DVD Movie Factory to take the MPEG file you created above and burn it to VCD or DVD.
The mistake you guys are making is that you are using only Step 1 above--trying to use Studio 8 (which is what I use Sony Screenblast for) to do the whole process. While it will do it, it will not do it near as well--it does not have as good an MPEG encoder and as you see, you are having problems burning the DVD.

My suggestion is output your movie in AVI format with Studio 8 and follow the steps 2 and 3 above. Both of those softwares have free trials so it will not cost you anything. You could also skip step 2 and burn your movie to MPEG-2 (i.e., DVD format) with Studio 8 to your hard drive and then use U-Lead as a DVD authoring program to burn the DVD. Or, Ulead will also take an AVI file and encode it for DVD as well. It has excellent menu creation features (much better than Sonic DVD) and it is designed specifically to burn DVDs. But again, each of those programs in Step 1, 2, and 3 are designed for a specific purpose and do a better job when you use them only for the main purpose for which they were designed. The problem is some (like Studio 8) try to do the whole deal and as is usually the case with "do it all" programs, one part of a process suffers and some other vendor that has focused on just that process does a better job.

BTW--Studio 8 is a good program for rendering movies. I tried it and liked it, I just liked Screeblast better and from what I read--you had less problems with Screenblast then Studio 8--probably because Screeblast does not do the DVD authoring--when you buy it, you get Sonic DVD with it to do that, but that program does not do a good job at authoring--Ulead is far superior.

PS--Davey, go ahead and try this too, will you. I'd like your input on how the above process works in a 3-step process rather than doing the whole thing with Studio 8.
