Sounds like a USB problem. I would go to the PC manufacturer or motherboard manufacturer and get the latest drivers for the USB component or the chipset.

Welcome to TSG.

It would be helpful if you were to include some more information. Did the camera ever work or is this a new installation? Do you have other USB devices working on the computer? Have you tried another USB device from the port the camera is plugged into? Give us more information about exactly how you went about dumping everything before reinstalling.

M$ says: “An application or service has shut down this hardware device. (Code 44)”
Resolution: “Restart the computer.
On the General Properties tab of the device, click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooting wizard.”

The General Properties tab can be found in Device Manager: Right click My Computer>Properties>Device Manager and see if the camera is listed. It might also be in Control Panel under Scanners and Cameras or as a separate listing for the camera. Start>Settings>Control Panel. You would use one or the other to remove the camera and drivers before you can reinstall them. Run through the troubleshoot first if one is listed.

With Windows 98SE you need the drivers so it can use the USB. That is often different from the software to organize and work with the pictures like the MGI Photosuite. I have no idea whether the viewer includes the driver, but the driver has to be removed from Control Panel or Device Manager to reinstall. If you have looked in both Device Manager and Control Panel and there is no reference to the camera with it plugged in then I would think a driver would need installing. Also go to My Computer with the camera plugged in and see if there isn’t a “removable drive” in addition to your C drive and D drive.

Does it show in device manager and/or control panel with the camera plugged in? If so, remove it and remove the software again. Reinstall everything.
