Firewire on Premiere?
I have adobe premiere 6.0 and I just got it to work properly. When I went to capture, my camera didn't show up in the choices under the movie capture DV device control. Apparently this is too new of a camera for the program . But I was thinking, should'nt it work on the generic setting? I'm using the USB hookup for the computer and it works fine with other editing programs. It even can capture with them. But i think not with premiere. I was woundering if there was a way to make the USB work with premiere or if I had to get a firewire. If so, theres a problem, my computer doesnt have a firewire port . So what should I do?

Mike have you tried updating Premiere from Adobe's website to see if that solves your problem of it not seeing your DV device?

What capture card are you using? Maybe it's not compatible with Premiere. I'm not sure because I do not use Premiere nor do I have any capture devices of that sort.

Ok, I wasn't sure if you had a capture card because they do make them. No I don't think a GeForce2 MX card qualifies as a capture card, unless it has video input??

Hi Mike. As far as I know, you can't capture without some kind of capture card. Firewires aren't too expensive these days. If you're going to purchase one, you might as well get one that's certified for use with Premiere. Here is the site that tells you which ones are certified for Premiere.

Good luck. Please let us know if everything works out for you.

I'm confused. So I either buy a firewire card or a capture card?

I’m not the sharpest knife in the drawer with video. You need a capture card if you have an analog camcorder and you don’t need one if it is digital.

You say you have other editing programs that will capture the video from your camera. That would indicate your camera has USB and is digital unless you have a special USB capture device.

Premier is an editing program. It doesn’t matter how you get the file into the computer. Capture with one of the other programs and save the file. Open it in Premier and edit it.

You don’t need a firewire DVD recorder. An internal IDE recorder is your best and cheapest choice.

ok, slipe but I'd rather not go through that hastle because I really dont have very good editing programs and also the usb doesn't yield good results... I'd rather just get a firewire card. So thanks guys.

Mike--go purchase an OCHI complient firewire card--ADS makes a good one and they aren't very expensive. This should solve your problem--make sure the firewire card has TI chips---I know the ADS does.
