question about VCD
If you make a VCD slide show to play back on the TV shouldn't it also play back on the computer if you have a DVD player and software?

ya, it should. I make vcd's all the time. If you are using windows media player then there should be an option in one of the menus

See I am a little confused about all this stuff. I have a DVD player in my HP computer and a sample program of Win DVD that came installed when I bought the computer. I have made a VCD using the HP memories disk creator and when I insert the CD I put the VCD on I can open and play that back in Win DVD. Now when I make a VCD with proshow gold The CD won't play back in Win DVD. I see my title screen with one picture but the slide show doesn't play and I have even tried hitting play. When I make the proshow gold VCD CD I do get a windows media player file installed on the dekstop that plays the slide show but I guess I thought it should also play back in Win DVD but I am clueless about all this stuff.

Wow, you sould lost. Ok, first of all I'd recommend nero to make a VCD but secondly, you can just play the cd in a regular cd drive. I have never ever had a problem with VCD's made with nero when playing them in a dvd player or my computer cd drive. Also, you really dont have to play it on win dvd, just use windows media player, its works fine and it's user friendly. Heres the web site http://www.nero.com .

Thank you I understand now that I don't have to use Win DVD. I thought that had to go with my DVD player on the computer to play DVD stuff. Proshow gold is a slide show program that will let me make VCD, DVD slides shows and stuff it's not really a CD burning program but it burns the VCD right from in the program for you.

Nero Express came with my CD burner- this is from their tutorial:

This format uses a compression standard called MPEG to store the audio and data. VCD's can be played on most home video players that support this format and CD-ROM and DVD-ROM players with appropriate software. SVCD discs can be played on DVD players, PC's with DVD-ROMS or a CD-ROM drive with software which allows this type of video format to be seen.

Since not everyone may have the "appropriate" software ( or be familiar with how to use it if they do) if I burn a picture CD for friends or family I generally make 2 copies. 1 as a data file and one as a VCD which I mark "DVD playable copy". Disks are cheap and that way they have a copy in .jpeg data format to view, edit or print from and a copy to view on a TV screen via their DVD player.
Almost any half decent picture viewing software allows you to view picture data files in a slideshow but not everyone has what they need to view a VCD.

Also, I have never tried this myself but if you are familiar with Irfanview (freeware) it has an option to burn to disc directly from their program (Nero and proper plugin may be needed for this) and it burns the viewer on the disc so it automatically opens in slideshow on any computer you use the disc in.

Thank you for all the usefull information. My proshow gold makes a slide show that will open on any computer. The ones I have sent to people I have been told they had no problem opening plus I can upload it to some site conected to the program and share it that way. I like the fact that I have over 280 transition effects, I can add multiple sound tracks, add multiple captions per slide, custom show backgrounds and loads of other stuff I have not checked out yet. It seem to be a program that does a lot if you like something that complicted and I guess I do.

I noticed your program worked well. I created 180 pic slideshow and added 5 sound tracks and when I burn it to VCD, DVD I get the pics but only the first half of my audio tracks and the last half go blank. Can you help. I've been on this for a couple of days trying to figure it out.

Best thing to do is e-mail the company. I don't have a DVD player on my TV so I can only do stuff for the computer right now and the sound works fine when I make computer ones or put them on CD and play back on the computer. Maybe it's the audio tracks you are using? Try various ones and see is all I can think of.

Check your audio files formats, Proshow Gold only supports .wav and .mp3 audio files.

Acraftylady,
When you have finished compiling your slideshow click on the "Video" icon next to the "Video CD" icon. This will then save an mpeg format file to your computer.
The mpeg file can be played back in lots of programs, I can confirm it will play in :-
Power DVD
Windows Media Player
Quick Time Player
Real Player
Creative Media Source Player
Nero Show Time.
Another advantage of having the slideshow in mpeg format is that you can then use it in other programs such as Windows Movie Maker or Nero Slideshow.
All you do is insert the file as it is just another video clip as far as the host program is concerned.

Yes this is how I do it but it's not meant to play in WIn DVD. Didn't realize that until after I played around with the program but now that I have had it a while I am understanding it.

Stiabro, you get free updates for one year on the program so if you are within your one year then do the updates. I think there was an audio one not long ago. If you are over the one year then you pay a small fee to update the program. If you are just using the trial version then I don't know if you can get any updates but check into it.
