how to network video files
I hope someone can help. I video stage and theatre productions. The main camera record is on a computer running adobe premeire and storage is on an external hard drive. My question is how do I set up an additional computer to access what has been already recorded without disturbing the currently recording program. I already tried a standard networking between the 2 computers but when I accessed the computer # 1 hard drive the recording made at the time had dropped frames and stuttered...

I need more information--what are you capturing too--a laptop--if so which one and how is it configured. Also, are you trying to capture live performances and edit existing footage as you capture on the same machine??? Be a bit more specific in your descriptions---

Also, telll me what camera you are shooting with--There are some very decent dedicated HD's (FIrestore is one that I have used) that will either attach to a Bauer mount or can other wise be attached to your camera---

By the way, drop me a line--I shoot loads of theatrical stuff--would like to learn more about what you do.

transfering video files
both computers are equipped with the same capture cards and adobe premeire. computer # 1 is running windows NT Professional computer # 2 is running windows xp. The external hard drives are LaCies 120 gigabyte drives at 7200rpm. I am capturing to 2 desktop computers and I'm trying to bring the file into computer # 2 and then editing it there. I'm trying just file transfers. I am usind a 3 chip broadcast camera (JVC DV5000) but because I am using a video switcher the out put is analoge goint to a break out box hooked to the capture card. Audio is also on a seperate 16 channel audio mixer going to the break out box audio input.

ITs not going to happen--you are talking about a high end fiber optic set up to give you the ability to move video from one drive to another.

video files transfer fine...the trouble is while the hard drive is recording....while it's not I can transfer files over the network connection. Isn't there a way I could use a server or something to gather all the video files in 1 central location ?

Sure you could--but you are talking real slow---For instance, yesterday copying approximately 40 gigs of video from one hard drive to another local hard drive to another one took at least 50 minutes.

we would only be transfering about 2 to 3 gigs at a time. Anyway the problem is while we were transfering a 2 gig section the hard drive that was recording at the time started to stutter. We had a tech with us and he said it was because the network cards were not compatable. I want to make sure before I gut these machines again and put in newer cards...

Forget about doing both things at once--capturing video is incredibly taxing on any machine and if you are trying to both capture and transfer you are only looknig for problems.
