Can't open photo...
Hey all,

Whenever I double click on an image, say a JPEG, the pic opens up with the MS picture and fax viewer, but when I click on the button to close the viewer and open the pic for editing, it just closes it completely and never opens up with the editor.

How do fix that?

PaveFE

You need to associate a photo editor in order for the edit option to work. Have you tried doing this yet? Some use M$ photo Editor, which needs to be installed first. I use irfanview. A free image editor that works quite well, and did I mention it's free.
You can download irfanview and its plugins from here:

Pretty tough to tell with a one word "Thanks" response

Sorry for the short response, I was a bit busy earlier and didn't have time. I'm able to associate the JPEGs with Ifranview (I have it too), but also noticed that I don't have MS Photo editor. I wanted to be able to have them open first with the picture/fax viewer, and then click the button to close that progam and open an editing one. I couldn't make that work though. I'll live with how I have it, but I hate not knowing. I tried using the advanced options when associating the files, but that didn't work either.

The article I read at M$ said, you need to have photo editor installed. I assumed that meant, picture/fax viewer would not open them to edit, without you having M$ Photo Editor.

I am having a similar problem with this on XP for a long time now. When I click a photo I have it open in the picture and fax viewer. Then on the tool bar at the bottom of the picture I click the edit button and it opens in a photo progam to edit just not the one of my choice. It used to open in the one of my choice until I installed MS office last fall and then it changed to to the Microsoft photo editor in office. I managed to play around once and get it to stop that and now paint will open but I have no clue what I did but It still won't open with the software of my choice when I click the edit button in the picture and fax viewer. You can't just right click and pick open with and use this all the time because then when you first click a photo it won't open the picture viewer anymore it will open in the program you picked. My guess is there must be something in the registry that has to be changed but I refuse to go in there as I don't know anything about it. My XP is preinstalled so I have no disk but if you have an XP disk maybe you could do a repair of files and see if that would fix it. I am going to search on this again and if I find out how to change where you edit I will post back.

To change what opens which files, open picture/fax veiwer and in the "Menu Bar" click on "Tools" then scroll to "Folder Options", click on the "File Types" tab. After it loads the file types, scroll to jpg, click change at the bottom of this window, there you can associate whichever program you want to use to open jpg's. You can do this with each type of photo icon referenced in your computer, ie, .bmp, .jpeg, etc.

But then it won't open with the pic/fax viewer first, which is what I want. Then when I click on the button for editing, I want the pic/fax viewer to close and the photo editing program to open.

When I open a photo and look at the tool bar in the XP picture viewer I don't have tools and then folder options. When I go to my coomputer I have those settings at the top and I tried that a long time ago with no luck. I scrolled down to JPG and JPEG and clicked change and pointed to the program I wanted and no luck. I even tried again today but when I click edit in the picture viewer it still opens in paint and they are JPEG I am opening. After I open in the picture viewer I would like to click edit and have another program besides paint open. We are both trying to accomplish the same thing with no luck.

I asked a computer tech and I was right you have to edit the registry but back it up first. I finally found someone else that asked this exact same question in PC magazine and it gives full instructions for backing up the registry and doing the fix. When I searched a long time ago I probably didn't word it right searching google so I didn't see this. The link in the article does not point to a page for backing up the registry but I found it myself. I have never touched the registry before but I am going to back it up and give it a go so I will post back with the results if I don't fry the computer, ha ha.

Forget about my last post. I finally after months fixed this and I did not have to edit the registry. When I played around many times before I couldn't get it to fix I don't know but today was my lucky day. I will try and explain what I did and hopefully it will work for you. Make a restore point before you do anything.

I went to my computer in XP and at the top clicked tools, folder options. I had three things in there, JPE, JPEG and JPG. For JPEG and JPG I had no advance button to edit so I clicked restore and that defaulted them back to the MS photo editor and I then had an edit button on those. I then clicked advance for JPEG and then edit. Where it says application used to perform action I took out the path that was there and plugged in this since I wanted it to open in photoimpression and presto when I now open the picture viewer and click edit photo impression opens up.

C:\Program Files\Arcsoft\SoftwareSuite\PhotoImpression\PhotoImpression.exe"

How I got this path to plug in was I went to start and right clicked on photoimpression and clicked properties and copied what was in the target field then pasted it over there. Do all these steps using the software of your choice. I do hope it works so post and let me know.

You asked the computer tech? I'm sorry but I thought that was what I was.....LOL

If you don't see this when you open picture/fax viewer something definitely isn't right with your computer.

And I did not say "Advanced" I said

see attachment. Maybe from now on I should use attachments to get my meaning across. Afterall, they do say "A picture is worth a thousand words."

Oh my I worded that wrong. I have an e-mail friend that knows a lot about computers and sometimes helps me, I call him my computer tech so I guess he is not a real one but to me he is. I do appologize you are very knowledgeable and helpful. He tried helping me once before and we couldn't get it straight and today I caught him online and asked him again he thought I might need to edit the registry and I was thinking the same thing. Then some how I figured out what I was doing wrong to change the edit button. I got it working right now. I can open a photo in the picture and fax viewer and then when I click edit it then opens photo impression. I did what I posted in the other thread and that fixed it so maybe it will help the other poster. I guess I just needed to take a break from this for months and then play around in file types again. When I open a photo this is what I see in the picture and fax viewer so maybe my computer is customized a little different?
