new system for viedo editing
I am getting a new system on which I intend to do editing of home video. The system I have chosen is as follows:-
P4 3.4ghz
xp professional
2048mb ddr2 400 mhz
128 mb pci-express ati radeon x800se
400gb serial ata hd with 8mb databurst
plus f/w connection

It is an expensive system but as I am not having to pay for it, its a gift, I thought I would get the best availiable.

What I need to know, being new to this is will I also need a seperate capture card for the video from my dv camcorder or will the graphics card listed be sufficient.

I have seen editting software that come with its own capture card (pinnacle 9) and am somewhat confused aboth whether a seperate capture card is needed.

Thanks for your help.

I'm not familiar with that particular ATI card, however I've owned many ATI cards including two ATI All-in-Wonders and find them excellent. I'm currently using an All-In-Wonder Radeon which includes coaxial inputs as well as the standard video inputs, S-video, TV tuner, remote, etc.

If you're not paying for it, why limit yourself to only a 128 MB card? Even if you were paying for it yourself, you'd be better off going with a bit more power.

Also, i'm a fan of the 800 Mhz Front-Side Bus.

My thoughts, for what they're worth.

That system will be fine--although you want to dedicate one drive for your applications et al and one drive strictly for video--thats key in trouble free capturing. Also, you might go to the videoguys.com site and read the article by David LaBorde on setting up Windows for video editing--very important. have fun.

PS. If you want to save yourself a bundle--by a Matrox 550 card----video editing doesn't require much more and this card is used by many pros.

i'd probably get an all-in-wonder ATI card that has atleast 256mb because well...looks like that system is gonna have the best in all the other department, why not have it in the vid card department
